Warwick’s Furney named A-10 Pitcher of the Year

Former Pilgrim standout Sean Furney had a dominant season at the head of the University of Rhode Island pitching staff, and he was rewarded on Tuesday with quite an honor.

Furney was named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Pitcher of the Year by the league’s head coaches on the strength of a 1.98 earned run average, which was second in the conference. His top performance of the year was a complete game shutout against Dayton in April, in which he faced the minimum 27 batters.

The award marks the second consecutive year that a former Warwick high school player has earned an A-10 Player of the Year honor. Last season, former Hendricken standout Jeff Roy was named A-10 Player of the Year. This season, Roy was named Second-Team All-Conference.

The third-seeded Rams were scheduled to begin play in the Atlantic-10 Championship tournament on Wednesday against No. 6 seeded La Salle, with the results unavailable at press time.
