Warwick’s Hibachi Grill the ultimate buffet

We’ve enjoyed a number of buffets in our time, but none quite as elegant, varied and large as the new Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet in Warwick.

On our first visit, we were overwhelmed with the seven buffet tables filled with over 200 items, never making it back to the sushi bar and its namesake, the hibachi grill.

Site of the former Home Town Buffet next to Target at 1245 Bald Hill Rd., Hibachi Grill is filled with comfortable booths and tables in a brightly lit and comfortable environment. The food items are colorfully displayed in squeaky-clean warming tables, where they are constantly attended to by an efficient staff. While the food items are primarily Chinese, there is a variety of American cuisine to please even the fussiest eaters. You’ll also find some Thai, Mexican and Japanese dishes.

You can carve your own rib eye steak, ham and roast beef and take as much as you wish. Shrimp and chicken are prepared in a dozen or more ways, including General Tsao’s, Thai, coconut and jumbo. Little necks, quahoags, mussels, squid, crabmeat and salmon as good as I’ve had in high end restaurants are all kept hot and fresh and constantly replenished.

The dessert tables feature everything from fresh cakes to puddings to fruits, ice cream and a huge variety of baked goods.

On our second visit, we headed straight for the hibachi grill, where two chefs worked with the utmost speed and skill, cooking the items we had selected, which included three types of meat, chicken, shrimp, Chinese vegetables, mushrooms and much more. I had mine cooked in teriyaki sauce, while Joyce went for the hot sauce.

Next was the sushi table. Again, the choices were plentiful. We’re not big fans of the Japanese specialty, but did try a couple of interesting items and loved the fried sushi.

Manager Jean Zhoa pointed out the number of child-friendly items for those who had yet to venture into something besides chicken fingers, pizza and French fries. When I saw a tray of meatloaf, I thought, “They’ve got to be kidding!” It was so good, I went back for seconds, along with the tasty crab rangoon.

If you have a big appetite, you can load your plate as many times as you wish, and a friendly waitperson will whisk it away while you are back at the buffet tables.

We like to take small “thank you” portions of many different items (except for the crab rangoon, which we could make a meal of).

The ingredients are all fresh. The variety of sauces add to the enjoyment. If you are a vegetarian, there are numerous salad and fruit items to choose from.
