BIG YEAR: Warwick's Kenny Rix, with Sensei Kevin O'Donnell, shows off some of his hardware from his successful year in martial arts.

Kenny Rix, age eight, was recently presented with several awards at this year’s Krane Martial Arts Awards banquet. The banquet was held on Saturday, March 3rd at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. Awards presented were for achievements during the 2011 competition year.

Krane is a ratings organization that sanctions martial arts events and provides a rating service for its members.

Rix, who is from Warwick, was named Rhode Island state champion in three disciplines – fighting, traditional forms and weapons. In addition, Rix was also crowned overall Grand Champion in fighting, traditional forms and weapons.

In order to be awarded Grand Champion, a competitor must finish first and be the top-ranked competitor out of all the Krane participating states.

The Krane Ratings organization is comprised of competitors from the following northeastern states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

In addition to his Krane awards, Rix was also recognized at this year’s NASKA (North American Sport Karate Association) banquet, which was held January 12 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, Ill.

Rix received awards for being second in the nation in forms, third in fighting, sixth in youth weapons (ages nine-and-under) and fourth in creative forms(ages 11-and-under).

Rix is trained by Sensei Kevin O’Donnell of Nick Cerio’s Kenpo Karate in Warwick.
