Warwick’s new Smashburger a smash hit

There is always an air of excitement when a new restaurant opens.

The mayor and the Chamber of Commerce show up for the ribbon cutting, samples are shared by the invited guests, and everyone is eager to taste something new and different.

That’s what we found at Smashburger, the new restaurant chain that has landed at 1000 Bald Hill Road (Route 2 to natives), in the shopping center that boasts a Trader Joe's and Birds Unlimited.

We joined the health-conscious Mayor Scott Avedisian at the grilled carrot and green bean appetizers, which were really something new and different…and delicious. Chamber President Steve Kitchen just had to try the Rhode Island Smashburger with the state’s own Backyard Food’s signature red pepper relish.

Always up for the task, Joyce and I tried everything, from their fried pickles to their unique rosemary and garlic seasoned fries to their tasty shakes.

The 65-seat fast food takeout or eat-in restaurant serves every item fast and fresh. The line to the ordering station moves quickly as you grab a menu or look at the one over the 400-degree grill, where the Angus burgers are “smashed” and served with their juices intact on soft, fresh egg buns.

The main problem is deciding what garnishes to include. I have always enjoyed mixing mayo with Gulden’s mustard, but this is the first restaurant where I’ve seen it done.

Most burgers are in the $6 to $7 range. We also tried the crispy chicken sandwich, which Joyce liked, along with the mushroom smashburger.

We’ll be back to try their salads, Haystack Onions, and variety of burgers.

Smashburger is open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. every day. You can call ahead at 381-2298.
