As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, approximately 30 prominent Rhode Island-area men are taking a stand against breast cancer by supporting the annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk through participation in a new initiative, the Real Men Wear Pink campaign. And Warwick resident Jared Haibon, of “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise” fame, is one of the men who have agreed to take on this challenge.
Throughout the month of October, Jared will wear pink every day and use his social networks to encourage others to take action against breast cancer by raising awareness about and money for this disease that is expected to be newly diagnosed in 940 Rhode Island women and claim the lives of 120 others this year.
“Not only have they been asked to wear pink every day in October to raise awareness about breast cancer issues, but these men also will be raising critical funds to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from breast cancer,” said Kelsey Newton, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Providence community manager. “Funds raised allow the Society to be there for those touched by breast cancer, from research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, the Society provides support to everyone impacted by the disease. Every action we take moves us one step closer to a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.”
Each Real Men Wear Pink candidate is charged with a fundraising challenge and will participate in a little friendly competition to be the top fundraiser among the other candidates by the end of the campaign. Each will also join more than 15,000 others in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, in downtown Providence.
“I'm excited to have the opportunity to support the American Cancer Society to help bring financial and emotional support to those suffering from this terrible disease,” said Haibon, who in daily life is a member of the management team at two Providence restaurants. “Everything helps, so let’s make a difference together!”
Haibon is in good company. Thirty other men are joining Haibon in this effort. A few of the other 2016 Providence Real Men Wear Pink participants include: Matt Burriesci, executive director, Providence Athenaeum; The Honorable Jasiel Correia, mayor of Fall River, Massachusetts; Sean Holley, attorney and Johnson & Wales professor; Dan Hurley, University of Rhode Island head basketball coach and Shawn Lynch, district director for Stop and Shop in southeast Massachusetts and on Aquidneck Island. Although Jared is just getting started on his fundraising efforts, the group as a whole has already raised almost $18,000.
“With all this support, our community is showing it can make a huge impact in the fight against breast cancer,” said Newton. “We are grateful to our Real Men Wear Pink participants for lending their voices to our cause and fighting for everyone touched by breast cancer.”
