West Bay Residential Services, a Warwick-based care provider for individuals with developmental disabilities, recently received the prestigious Superior Award at the 18th Annual Worksite Health Awards breakfast.
Presented by the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, the Superior Award recognizes West Bay Residential Services and 17 other employers, including the City of Warwick, for their commitment to employee health and wellness. A total of 84 Rhode Island employers were honored at the event.
Though this is not the first time the care provider has been honored for excelling in the area of health and wellness, for West Bay Residential Services Director of Human Resources Victoria Zanghi-Brown, it might be the most significant.
“The flood in March of 2010 brought everything to an abrupt halt,” said Zanghi-Brown. “The office headquarters were completely destroyed. We were working out of business trailers with limited training space and didn’t get our programs back up and running until the end of that year.”
While certain employee programs related to health and wellness – like CPR and first aid training – are licensure requirements for every employee of West Bay Residential Services, Zanghi-Brown pointed to additional efforts, above and beyond what is required, that she and her colleagues have established that helped earn them the award.
“We are very pleased for this recognition of our work in 2011,” said Zanghi-Brown, “especially considering a major setback in 2010.”
Not satisfied to just coast through 2012 on “cruise control,” Zanghi-Brown mentioned numerous health and wellness features of West Bay Residential Services, both ongoing and upcoming.
“Eighty-two employees participated in the Shape Up RI spring challenge and we’re also offering a series of nutrition courses and blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density and sun safety screenings,” said Zanghi-Brown, “as well as ongoing multi-week programs for smoke cessation, weight loss and stress management.”
This year, for the first time, West Bay Residential Services will be offering its employees programming on a range of new subjects like creating and maintaining a sound sleep environment and Krav Maga self-defense.
