After winning the District 3 tournament just over a week ago, the Warwick West Side 9/10-year-old all-star team began play in the state tournament this weekend with mixed results.
The West Side stars won their opener on Saturday with an 11-9 victory over District 1 champion Elmwood.
West Side jumped out early on some aggressive base running and timely hitting. Elmwood wasn't going to go down lightly, though, as they battled and trailed only 10-9 after two innings. Marilyn McKay took the mound for West Side in the third inning and shut down Elmwood hitters. She kept it up, throwing three more scoreless innings.
"Marilyn was superb tonight,” West side manager Frank Brown said. “She hasn’t pitched a lot and gave us four scoreless innings in a close game. There isn't much more pressure than that.”
West Side added another run in the top of sixth.
That put West Side in the winner’s bracket final against Ditrict 4 champion Cumberland National.
But Cumberland played tough, knocking off West Side 14-4.
West Side fell behind 3-0 in the first but battled back in the bottom half of the inning keeping the game at 3-2. However, Cumberland put up seven more runs in the next two innings and shut down West Side defensively.
"We gave them runs,” Brown said. “We were aware of the style they play, we just weren't able to stay disciplined and we didn't swing the bats like this team can.”
Cumberland took a no-hitter into the fifth before Lexi Brown broke it up with a hit to center field.
The loss dropped West Side to the loser’s bracket final, where it is set to take on East Providence on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be played at West Side, which is hosting the tournament.
The winner of the West Side-East Providence game will take on Cumberland National on Friday in the finals.
