A West Warwick man was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting two Johnston teenagers after providing them and a third female teenager with alcohol.
Police say the man, identified as 20-year-old Tyler Driscoll of 54 Robinson Way in West Warwick, befriended one of the girls on Facebook several days before a sleepover at one of the girl’s house. The girl told police he presented himself as a 17-year-old and got her phone number.
According to police, the three girls climbed out of a window after arranging to meet Driscoll around 10:30 p.m. on July 27 and they met up at Domino’s Pizza on Hartford Avenue before driving around for a while and ending up in Johnston Memorial Park, where Driscoll gave the girls “a previously sealed bottle of ‘berry flavored’ Bacardi rum.”
In his report, Patrolman Stephen Altomari said Driscoll passed the rum around to the girls, who drank freely “straight from the bottle” while Driscoll drank none of it himself, claiming that he had already been drinking earlier. Altomari said the girls got highly intoxicated, and Driscoll took one of the girls to the first base dugout of one of the ball fields and forced her to the ground and raped her while she was too drunk to resist him.
Altomari said she told him they went back to the other girls, got into the car and drove the third girl home before going back to the park with the two intoxicated girls. The first victim told police she tried to tell her friend what was going on but her friend was almost passed out at the time and she was increasingly more fearful of Driscoll. She said when Driscoll began to assault the second girl, she was too drunk to help her but did know that her friend was saying “No” and “Stop” as he handled her and did the same thing to her friend that he did to her.
Altomari reported she was not sure when they got back into Driscoll’s car, but he became more and more belligerent toward them and demanded that she give him her cell phone, telling her it was “too dangerous.” She said he was enraged by the time they got to the 700 block of Hartford Avenue and said they were annoying him and punched her in the face and ordered her out of the car and then pulled the second girl out and threw her to the sidewalk, cutting and bruising her face, and then drove off.
In the meantime, the mother of the girl who was hosting the sleepover learned that the girls snuck out of the house and was driving around the area looking for them when a neighbor called and said he found the two girls stumbling around his yard partially clothed.
“At that point, the parents just assumed the girls were drunk,” said Deputy Chief David DeCesare, “one so drunk her parents took her to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for detox. As the girl sobered up it became apparent they had been sexually assaulted and Hasbro officials called us.”
DeCesare said the hospital provided police with the results of their forensic examination. On the basis of what they had, Johnston Lt. Det. Frank Levesque obtained a warrant and arrested Driscoll at home on Friday. He was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of assault and battery and three counts of procuring alcohol for minors. He is currently being held at the ACI without bail, with a bail hearing scheduled for Aug. 11.
DeCesare said that Driscoll had no prior charges, but other area departments are reviewing incidents and witnesses in their jurisdictions for similarities.
