Westbay Marketplace, the food pantry operated by the Westbay Community Action Program, received a “Best of the Best” award at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s annual Agency Conference on Friday, May 30.

The new award recognizes best practices in leadership and management, distribution, food safety, cultural competency, community partnerships and community resources. Three of the Food Bank’s 178 member agencies received a “Best of the Best” award.

The other agencies receiving “Best of the Best” include East Bay Food Pantry in Bristol and Lighthouse Community Outreach in Cumberland.

“Throughout the year, the Food Bank’s Agency Services team has noticed some impressive practices and procedures at our member agencies: practices that go above and beyond what we require of our members,” said Erica Hanson, Agency Services Director at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

The agencies receiving “Best of the Best” recognition received $1,000 cash grant to support their food distribution and a $2,500 grant toward the purchase of food.

“It is really a team effort. We have more than 30 active volunteers and four SER employees. Everyone works together to make it the best the Marketplace can be,” said Joshua-Michael Corrente, Westbay Marketplace manager.

“We’re happy to receive the money because it has set us up for food and supplies for the next two years,” he said.

“The Westbay Marketplace has very high standards,” said Tanisha Simpson, senior manager of Westbay’s Community Volunteer Support. “We are thrilled to have received this award. It shows we are doing well what needs to be done. I am proud of Josh because as the manager he and his staff are the ones that make the Marketplace what it is,” she said.

Tanisha and Joshua both have earned certificates from the Community Kitchen Serve Safe Class, establishing them as certified managers in food safety.
