What the Democrats are all about

To the Editor:

That was one great steak dinner!

I went to the Warwick Democratic City Committee steak dinner last Wednesday night. For a very reasonably priced $15 we feasted on a charcoal grilled steak with a salad, beans, baked potato bread and an open bar. It made me think about the Democratic philosophy of taking care of “the people.”

This was no occasion. This was no “event.” And at that price, this certainly was no fundraiser.

I got the sense that the Warwick Democrats just simply “care.” There were over a hundred in attendance and with an open bar (even the drinks were a bargain!) a great time was enjoyed by all. I believe events like last night is one of the reasons that the Warwick Democrats are growing in number every day. We have four Democratic-registered voters for every one Republican. We have 8 out of 9 Warwick City Council-people. And that is why we will sweep the 2016 elections in Warwick, (especially in the Mayors Office!)

Then I drove home and noticed a couple of Republicans at the local donut shop and I couldn’t help but think “We have steak. They have donuts! We are adding new members EVERY DAY! (I joined in January 2015) Their new member numbers look like the shape of a…donut. And when the election gets here our candidate wins will be in the “many”. And theirs? Well, I think it will resemble a donut!”

Being part of this success story is an honor. Meeting these leaders, learning from their wisdom, and developing lasting friendships with them has been, and continues to be, a great joy in my life. Politics aside, the Warwick Democratic Committee “cares.”

Isn’t that what Democracy is all about?

So, democrats get subsides food, free booze, and got to drive home drunk.

    What a party.

What a horses ass Richard is. I predict he will not be mayor. Of course, this is not a major prediction along the likes of Nostradamus. Warwick has elected a few horses asses from time to time but not in a while. Good luck RIchard.

    Dear Justanidiot,

I'm sorry. When did I report that the food was "subsidized" the booze was "free" and anyone "drove home drunk"??? I do agree with your "What a party!" comment though.

    Take care.

    Dear Davebarry,

Although I respectfully disagree with your prediction I do appreciate you wishing me "Good luck!" I also agree that Warwick has "elected a few horses asses from time to time." I would put any Mayor that raises taxes every year for 15 years, looses 5,800 taxpayers and lets 4,666 businesses close their doors in that EXACT category. You know, like the current guy. Thanks for bringing it up!

Stay well Dave. Tell Scott Small I said "Hello."

Gosh, I guess I was wrong. An open bar must mean that it is open and you pay for your drinks. Plus, I know lots of markets where you can buy a steak and all the trimmings and feed yourself for fifteen bucks.

Let's see, the State of Rhode Island has been run by Democrats for the last 50+ years. In those fifty years where has the State's standing gone?

    'nuf said.

Richard, your letter and your comments are a total contradiction.

In one sentence you blame the Republican Mayor for 15 years of tax increases yet you never explain how a totally control Democrat elected body with you as Mayor would change the current dismal fiscal conditions in the city.

You never explain why the current Democrat dominated “8 of 9 Warwick City Council people” continue to rubber stamp the mayor’s spending plan escalating to record levels each year, made up of a budget with structural deficits, tapping the rainy day fund, increasing debt by tens of millions of dollars, and with no plan to control it other than the annual increase in property taxes.

Right now with the current situation Warwick is in, I would be more inclined to vote for the guy or gal who is being prudent conserving what little dollars we have left on a simply inexpensive tasty donut. As opposed to the want-to-be politicians providing a full course steak dinner with all the fixing where the cost of admission doesn’t cover the expense of the dinner?

Does this so called fund raiser strategy seem to mirror the current spending philosophy in the city - spend, spend, spend and worry about the how to pay the bill later?

    No thanks!

Nothing, absolutely nothing, captures the sentiment of RI's Democrat Party quite like: 'Vote for us. We have steak and an open bar'. Mr. Corrente, look around. All those vacant store fronts, under-the-table jobs, a confiscatory system of taxation, a sanctuary state, and a regional reputation for hostility to business is all attributable to YOUR party. And you're asking us to vote for more of the same, because of steak and an open bar. Did I mention the open bar? Good Lord! How many martinis did it take to write this? These are the depths to which we have sunk.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the letter is. I think there are much better ways to communicate with voters. Very disappointing. I find the donut comment to be snarky and uncalled for. If you want to bring people together, is this really the way? Nothing will be solved if one party doesn't see the other party as an equal. What concerns me is that this wasn't a tweet or text. This was a letter/E-mail that was thought out, again, what was the purpose?

Rick, I think you need to smell some fresh sea air. Are you kidding me? Its the democratic council that has failed to repair one structural problem in this city. Lets for a moment take your council woman from Ward 7. Blithering idiot. Hasn't said one word since January 8th except to heckle a resident and to bless herself in public when the resident came to the mic. Frankly, I am deeply disheartened that you have aligned yourself with these people such as Travis and Wilkinson who have publicly prostituted their position for union favor, lied to the residents publicly on a number of occasions, hired an auditor in direct violation of the city ordinances, ignored the recommendations of the healthcare expert that THEY hired at a cost of $15K to the taxpayer, knowingly and willfully violated the open meetings laws twice in the last few months alone, derailed the school consolidation program last year just to spend $200K+ to hire a consultant to give them the same answer that the VOLUNTEER board gave 1 year ago, and on and on and on.

Can you define 1 issue that the democrats in the city or in this state for that matter have solved? 60 years of democratic control in RI and we are last on every list. Any idea why? There are plenty of cranes in the sky in RI, the problem is is that they have 2 wings and they fly south for the winter.

The problem is that there is not one democrat that has the balls enough to stand up and address the issues without having to perform felatio first on the union membership. Just listen to that despicable Ward 3 councilwoman. Before she bloviates she first has to massage every union member, its sickening, and you are falling into the same trap. Enough nonsense rhetoric.

Rob its almost as bad as you supporting a lady who films 16 year old kids on the job, takes pictures of kids walks home from school in winter, and snaps pictures of license plates of the elderly and blasts it on social media with no proof of wrong doing. Also somone who uses multiple user names on this page (multiple times) to try and slander people who disagree with her. When will this stop? Stacia Huyler isn't a serious candidate. She never was and she never will be. Please, continue to pick losing issues because the public sees through all of you. For every decent point you make, there's 12 erroneous, false, exaggerated stories.

Captain, I wouldn't want you to paint me or my opinions with others, so its not fair if I do the same. Again my mistake. Sticking to this issue I agree with alot of what you said about the Democratically controlled council. I believe that Mrs. Travis needs to be challenged as it appears she has gotten way too comfortable her last few terms. I believe a general election challenge (even a primary challenge) would keep her honest. I do not know as much about councilwoman Vella Wilkinson or Usler other than these 3 seems to align on many issues.

Mr. Corrente you have been silent on some of the criticism this letter to the editor has received. Do you atleast hear the point folks are making? Bragging about the lavish dinner, $15 price and open bar doesn't add up. It is specifically the biggest knock folks have on local Dems.

Lastly, I'd like to comment on this license plate/ Facebook situation that took place a few days ago. I have been very critical of Ms. Huyler on here. I disagree with her on some/many of her tactics and tone (and have said often she over plays her hand). I applaud her for her work on beach clean up, dumping on city property and her apology to the owners of the car she suspected of foul play (license plates). I believe it was from a person who realized they made a mistake. Hopefully Ms. Huyler waa sincere and she will recognize that this type of thing is part of what frustrates people about her. If nothing else my hope is she somehow changes the way she goes about things. Warwick could be so much better if everyone focused on the things we agree on, as opposed to everything we disagree on. It doesn't mean stop debating, but civility goes a long way (I don't exclude myself from this).

    Rob,

You seem to be against the councilwoman in ward 7. You live in ward 7. (I know. I've been to your beautiful home.) If you don't like what she is doing to represent your ward, don't just sit and complain about it, RUN FOR COUNCIL IN WARD 7! You have intelligence, courage and you clearly care about Warwick. If it wasn't for you, all Warwick citizens would be paying way too much in their car taxes. No one has saved Warwick taxpayers as much money as you have. No one! BUT... you said that you were "deeply disheartened that I have aligned myself with people such as Travis and Wilkenson." Rob! It is you that's kidding me! You should hear them talk about me!! You should hear them complain that I am "one of them!" just because I have applauded you and Rob Cushman and Staci Huyler when I thought you all deserved it. I have been very honest with my compliments and I have willingly accepted the heat for them. But let me now clear the record. I used to say "Donna Travis has done more for Oakland Beach than any other person on the planet!" I have recently revised that opinion. I now say "Donna Travis has done more for Oakland Beach than EVERY other person on the planet!" Now Rob, I don't expect her to put a "Corrente for Mayor" bumper sticker on her car due to her close relationship with the Mayor but every time we launch your zodiac from the "Donna Travis boat ramp", I remind you of her accomplishments. Rob, Warwick has issues. I agree. But they are not caused by a party. They are caused by people. And I'm going to improve that. I welcome you to join me. I will continue to give credit where credit is due. That's what working together is all about.

As far as "smelling some fresh sea air" I'm ready! My boat or yours? (I'll buy the bait!)
