To the Editor:
I was struck by your recent description of the two candidates in the Secretary of State’s race, Nellie Gorbea and Guillaume de Ramel, at the AARP Warwick candidates’ night. In your article, you describe them both as being for open and transparent government. But Ms. Gorbea is being fully transparent and Mr. de Ramel is not.
Mr. de Ramel has refused to release his income tax returns while Ms. Gorbea has released five years of her income tax returns. In this regard, Ms. Gorbea has demonstrated true leadership. All of the other candidates for statewide office except Mr. de Ramel and two others have followed Ms. Gorbea by agreeing to release their tax information.
I like Ms. Gorbea’s willingness to give a complete picture of herself and her family to the voters. I am not sure what Mr. de Ramel thinks he needs to hide. We need elected leaders who are open and honest.
So far, Ms. Gorbea has made the case that she is both and, in so doing, has shown she is a proven leader.
