To the Editor:
While I share Councilman’s DelGiudice concerns about pedestrians using the city crosswalks, will painting them green really improve safety?
I say no. Crosswalks could light up white, green or yellow; ultimately it comes down to being alert. If drivers are texting, talking on the cell phone or distracted behind the wheel, accidents will still occur. Heidi Gudmundson, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, affirmed, “national research has indicated that there is really no associated safety benefits for making crosswalks a different color.” With that being said, Councilman DelGiudice, why not try to advocate for harsher laws and fines against texting or push to make it a fine for talking on cell phones while driving?
