William Gibson’s inspirational Pulitzer Prize-winner ‘Miracle Worker’ opens at Ocean State Theatre

Ocean State Theatre Company (OSTC), currently celebrating its fourth season in its comfortable stadium-style theatre in Warwick, will present William Gibson’s unforgettable, inspiring, Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Miracle Worker from March 30 through April 17.

Immortalized on stage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic Tony Award-winning play tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and deaf Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: “water.”

Directed by Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner, the cast includes Warwick’s Laurel McMahon, who returns to OSTC having previously appeared as Balloon Girl in Gypsy, an ensemble member in Meet Me in St. Louis and Young Cosette/Young Eponine in Les Misérables. McMahon will portray the role of Helen Keller. In the role of Annie Sullivan, Ocean State Theatre Company welcomes Boston-based actress Brittany Rolfs, who will be making her OSTC debut. Helen’s parents, Captain Keller and Kate, will be portrayed by Kristin Wetherington, who made her OSTC debut as Louise in last summer’s popular production of Gypsy and Kevin B McGlynn, who returns to OSTC after appearing in Guys and Dolls (Nathan Detroit) and Les Misérables (Javert). Other returning OSTC alumni include Joseph DePietro of New York, who most recently appeared as Edward Rutledge in 1776, Jonathan Fisher of Providence, who appeared in this season’s production of Around the World in 80 Days, Jennifer Mischley of Wrentham, who played Alice Beineke in OSTC’s season opener, The Addams Family, Staci Morin of Cranston, who is appearing in her fifth production with OSTC, Brooke Lee Ann Boisvert of Burrillville, who was last seen in The King and I and Jerry Carino of Pawtucket, who played Tommy Mara Jr. in Miracle on 34th Street.
