William J. McCabe, 79, of Tom’s River, N.J., passed away April 8, 2012 in Tom’s River, where he had resided for the past 26 years. He was the longtime companion of Maryann McCabe and ex-husband of Alicia L. (Webster) McCabe.
He was the son of the late Eugene and Eva (Gillis) McCabe. Mr. McCabe was born in Providence and grew up in South Providence. He attended LaSalle Academy and the Tyler School. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years before retiring in 1986. Prior to that, Mr. McCabe proudly served in the United States Air Force. Mr. McCabe was also a popular part-time bartender in the 1970s and ’80s at the Brightridge Club in East Providence and also at Kilkenny’s Tap in Providence. He also worked part time at the Narragansett Brewing Company in Cranston in the early 1970s.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. In his retirement years he became an avid reader and loved to watch baseball and football. He also loved dogs and frequently took care of other people’s dogs while they were away.
He was the loving father of Lisa A. McCabe of Newington, Conn. and William J. McCabe Jr. of Warwick. He is also survived by three sisters, Mary McCabe of Warwick, Esther Nardoza of East Providence and Arlene Cinqmars of Maine, and a brother, John McCabe of Warwick. Mr. McCabe also was a brother of the late Edward McCabe and Elaine McCormick.
His funeral will be held April 21 at 7:30 a.m. from Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Bernard Church, 275 Tower Hill Road (corner of Ten Rod Road), North Kingstown. Burial with full military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
