(High-tech zombie flick)

A zombie movie by any other name is still a zombie movie.

This one goes for high-tech, super special effects, a pseudo-intellectual approach and zombies who run very fast.

Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who retired to “spend more time with his family,” a loving wife (Mireille Enos) and two daughters. They are driving through downtown Philadelphia when they find themselves in the middle of panic in the streets.

Zombies are running amuck, killing everyone in sight. People react by trying to outrun them, but these are not the zombies of “Night of the Living Dead.” They don’t drag their feet. For some strange reason, people are more concerned about looting the stores than escaping to safety.

His old boss calls him on his cell phone, offering safety for his family if he helps him get to the bottom of this. They are rescued from a rooftop by a helicopter and brought to a command ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

Hence the first moral issue: Only those who can help save the world, and their families, will be saved from the zombies.

The zombies quickly infect people from around the world with a deadly virus. Gerry’s job, if he is willing to accept it, is to find the source of the virus and save the world. He has no choice. If he refuses or is killed, his family is taken off the ship. He flies around to North Korea and then to Israel, and then somehow finds his way to “the source.” We won’t tell you where it is or how he unbelievably gets there. Then the zombie action kicks into full throttle as he fights to save humanity.

The special effects are very good. Pitt is good. The story is stupid.

Rated PG-13, with loads of violence and some pretty disgusting looking zombies.
