Jimmie Sauro was the heart and soul of the Bishop Hendricken wrestling team, which won its fourth consecutive state title over the winter.
Sauro won the 182-pound state crown for the Hawks with ease, marking the second straight year that the senior claimed an individual state crown at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.
“His career was extremely impressive, but it’s not a surprise for me because of his work ethic,” Hendricken head coach Kevin Hennessey said. “He’s a kid that wrestled year-round. Instead of going to the beach in the summer, Jimmie went to wrestling camps to get better.”
Hennessey noted that kids like Sauro don’t come around often, as the senior captain was as impressive in the classroom as he was on the mat.
“In my opinion, James Sauro, Jr. is the perfect example of what a student-athlete should be,” Hennessey said.
It was easy to see that Sauro was a great leader for the Hawks. After he won the 182 championship, his teammates flocked around him and were as excited as he was. There’s no question that Sauro helped others rise up and meet their potential.
“He was a terrific leader,” Hennessey said. “Everyone wanted to be like him.”
Replacing a kid like Sauro certainly won’t be easy for Hennessey, but with Hendricken’s deep program, it should find someone to step up and fill that role.
“It’s going to be very difficult,” Hennessey said of going into next winter without Sauro. “We have a bunch of young guys, we’re just waiting for someone to step up.”
Hennessey is confident that Sauro will have success in his future endeavors.
“Jimme Sauro will be successful in anything he does,” Hennessey said.
