The Writers’ Circle’s online fall magazine premiered Sept. 1 and can be viewed at www.riwriterscircle.com through Dec. 31. Principal editors for the issue are Cleveland Francoeur, Rose Pearson, Emily Petit, Heather Sullivan, and Ellen Taylor. The 2014 issue will follow in January and will showcase mental health themes by contest winners and guest contributors.

In the meantime, Rhode Islanders are invited to view the free 2013 fall issue, featuring stunning photography by Cleveland Francoeur of Michigan. “Words of Wisdom” column is back with encouragement from Providence Journal columnist Mark Patinkin, novelist and screenwriter Robert Leuci, and RI Poet Emeritus Lisa Starr. Added wisdom is provided by guest contributor Molli Nickell, former publisher, Time-Life editor, and motivational speaker. Her article, “Quick, Gimme Chocolate!” deals with the dreaded query letter. Nickell is the founder of “Get Published Now,” a widely read online newsletter for writers.

Poet Brett Rutherford, editor and founder of Poets’ Press, takes the reader into his dark and scary poem “Hoxie House,” while poet Heather Sullivan of Portsmouth soothes the troubled soul with light and sound. My Irises, painted by the late and gifted artists Carla Belniak, is the back-drop for Ms. Sullivan’s poetry. Bill Carpenter, poet and photographer, invites his reader to walk on a canyon floor in the desert and to be at one with the silence. Brett Rutherford has a few choice words for would-be poets, when he challenges the reader in his essay: “What Is A Poem, Anyway?” Fiction author Rob Mariani of Bristol, founder of Creative Communications Club of Providence, introduces the reader to “Helen Walker,” a hard working but unappreciated housewife, who finds her salvation and escape in walking clear over the moon. Rebecca MacDonell-Yilmaz, doctor in residence at RI Hospital, takes the reader on a terrifying late-night ride. Her nonfiction chapter “Collision” is part of a larger work of nonfiction in progress, “In Search of Grace: A Journey Through Medical School.” Rounding out the online magazine, Cleveland Francoeur’s photography startles the senses: Broken Dreams, Hoxie House, Red Sky Over Tiverton, and West Island, Massachusetts linger long after the last page is read.
