They came dressed in a variety of old-time garb.

They wore clothing like shawls, bathrobes, over-sized bifocals, different length of pearl necklaces, and slippers.

They even had dashes of gray and white in their hair, and used mini-walkers to mark a milestone for the Early Childhood Center, the town of Johnston’s first-ever all-day kindergarten.

“It’s always great to continue celebrating learning here at the ECC,” said Julie-anne Zarrella, the school’s principal. “There’s so much to learn from one another, from both the old and the young.”

Despite two snow days that interfered with the ECC’s pre-planned and unique 100th day of school, it was all systems go Tuesday as children enjoyed an indoor parade to kick off the celebration of being what Zarrella called “100 days of being smarter.”

Many of the school’s students were allowed to come to school Tuesday dressed up as a person who is 100 years old.

“We told the children they could wear a hat or a mustache, or perhaps dress in a housecoat and curlers to show their creative side of this event,” Zarrella said. “It was a real special event, to say the least.”

Equally as impressive, the ECC’s teachers held planned activities in their respective classrooms related to the 100th day of school.

“And later this week,” Zarrella said, “we’re hoping to have a visit from a centenarian to speak to our students and tell our children what it was really like when he was growing up in those good old days.”
