The Rhode Island Youth Theatre (RIYT) will be putting on two performances of the beloved musical “Les Miserables” this upcoming weekend, with youth from across the state.
The musical, based of Victor Hugo’s epic of the same name, follows the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-con, as he struggles for redemption after breaking his parole throughout escalating tensions leading to the French Revolution. Throughout the play Valjean is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who believes once a criminal, always a criminal.
Sisters Caroline and Elizabeth Bateson from East Greenwich are directing RIYT’s production. Caroline portrayed Fantine when the RIYT first took on the epic musical in 2008.
“This experience and specific group of kids has really reminded me of the loving, supportive community I first fell in love with, myself, growing up as a theater kid. I am so proud of them,” said Caroline.
Christopher Lysik, who was also in “Les Miserables” with Caroline, as Gavroche, musically directs.
There are approximately 50 high school-aged students as well as incoming college freshmen participating in the performance.
The show, which is entirely performed by students, will be this Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6, beginning at 7 p.m. both nights. RIYT’s production will take place at the Scottish Rite Auditorium at 2115 Broad St., Cranston. Tickets are $14 in advance and $15 at the door. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.riyt.org.
Several local students have taken lead roles in play: Ethan Miller as Jean Valjean; Kate Fitzgerald as Fantine; Rebecca Malachowski as Cosette; Brian Roque as Monsieur Thenardier; and Abby McMahon as Eponine. Connor Buonaccorsi from Cranston plays Enjolras.
