A. Marion (McCarthy) Rooney, 92, of Naples Florida, and Narragansett RI passed away peacefully on February 16, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late William L. Rooney, a retired Providence Journal news photographer. They were married 65 years.

Born in Providence, a daughter of late Jeremiah and Jane (Wrynn) McCarthy. She lived in Warwick for most of her life until moving to Naples in 2006, but still returned to Rhode Island to enjoy summers on Great Island in Narragansett with those she loved most. She and Bill were members of the Great Island Association for nearly 45 years where they attended numerous events with their dear friends from the island. Marion was a socialite who always enjoyed a good party or a gathering with friends. Marion was a teacher in the East Providence and Warwick school systems for 30 years. She received her bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College. She taught in East Providence for eight years and later in Warwick, where she taught at Lakewood, Norwood, Park, and Sherman Elementary Schools before retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Rhode Island College Alumni Association, as well as the Warwick and Rhode Island Retired Teachers’ Associations.

After retiring, Marion became a member of the Rolling Greens Golf Course where she and Bill regularly golfed with many of their close friends from the Great Island Association and the St. Peter’s Couples’ Club. Marion had friends in many places because she loved people and definitely had the gift of gab. She loved to engage everyone in a conversation and regale them with stories from the past. Marion was a parishioner of St. Peter’s in Warwick, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea in Narragansett, and Saint Elizabeth Seton in Naples Florida.

Marion is survived by her son Daniel E. Rooney of Warwick, RI, a daughter-in-law Janice Rooney of Warwick, RI, her daughter Dianne E. Kwoka (and her husband David) of Glastonbury, CT, and two granddaughters: Katelyn Kwoka (and her wife Rebecca) of Portsmouth NH and Suzanne Kwoka of Glastonbury CT.
