Alice Ann Freeman Violet

Alice Ann Freeman Violet, 73, of Ocean Point, East Greenwich, passed away June 28, 2012 at home.

She was a beloved daughter of the late Henry A. “Mickey” and Alice G. (Duffy) Violet. She was a graduate of St. Xavier Academy, Salve Regina College, where she received her BA, and Rhode Island College where she received her Master’s Degree. A school psychologist who was affectionately known to everyone as "Miss Alice", she had a very long and distinguished career with a great passion for special needs children beginning at Meeting Street School and later on at the Warwick School Department where she was employed for 41 years before retiring in 2011. She helped pioneer and implement many programs for pre-school children, including early intervention. "Miss Alice" strove to ensure that each child could receive the best educational support possible, and in so doing touched the hearts and lives of countless children and their families. Her child advocacy extended to many organizations, which she proudly supported, including the Volunteers of Warwick Schools (VOWS), Child, Inc., and RI Family Shelter. As an animal lover herself, she saw the great value of pet therapy in bringing smiles and wonder to children. She was also a supporter of environmental, humanitarian, and other non-profit organizations. She was a communicant of St. Gregory the Great Church, and in her spare time, she enjoyed theatre, dancing, and world travel.

She is survived by three children, Mark C. Freeman, Allison M. Herring and Bethany A. Tracy; one brother Henry A. “Bud” Violet, one sister Arlene M. Violet (former RI Attorney General); four grandchildren, David C. Tracy, Jr., Michael J. Tracy, Shelby V. Herring and Juliana L. Tracy.

Private services will be held at the request of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Child, Inc., 849 Centerville Rd, Warwick, RI 02886 or RIASPCA, 186 Amaral St., Riverside, RI 02915. Information and condolences, visit
