An upbeat community night out

With the exception of a few heavy drops, the rain held off Tuesday for the National Night Out event held at the Oakland Beach Commons featuring displays and exhibitions by police, firefighters, and numerous community groups and concluding with a fireworks display.

“This is perfect weather,” said Mayor Joseph Solomon as he, his wife Cindy and their son, Rep. Joseph Solomon Jr. walked between table displays and joined a crowd to watch the K-9 demonstration staged by the state police. The mayor recalled the heat of last year’s event, grateful for Tuesday’s cool bay breeze.

Earlier in the evening he joined Ward 6 Councilwoman Donna Travis in welcoming people to the event that Target stores sponsors nationally and aimed at bringing the community and law enforcement together.

Warwick Police Chief Col. Rick Rathbun urged attendees to introduce themselves to officers at the event and to thank them for their service. He then mingled with the crowd, as did his counterpart in the Fire Department, interim Chief Peter McMichael.
