It was recently Authors’ Week at the Westbay Children’s Center in Warwick Hilary Salk, the author of “Eavesdropping in Oberammergau,” spoke to the children about writing and how to capture their memories. She also gave each child a notebook to draw and write their thoughts and ideas and used her vintage puppets to also talk about storytelling.
Salk, of Providence and Narragansett, was educated at Brown University and Rhode Island College, was a contributor to an early edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves, a founder of the RI Women’s Health Collective, ran for governor of Rhode Island in 1982, and served as a real estate broker at Salk Real Estate in Providence, for 25 years.
Her book is based on living in Germany as a young Jewish girl, only two years after the war when her father was stationed there. Oberammergau is the site of the production of The Passion Play, which takes place once every 10 years, the next scheduled for 2020.
