Avedisian's `thank you' is this evening at Crowne Plaza

Scott Avedisian will say thank you to the community he served as mayor for more than 18 years at a reception this evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Now president and CEO of the Rhode Island Transit Authority, Avedisian left office in May. Soon after leaving, Avedisian talked of creating a charitable fund in his name to benefit Warwick non-profits. That plan dovetailed with those looking to hold an event recognizing Avedisian’s public service.

To focus on the work of Warwick non-profits and the diversity of services they provide, representatives from the Warwick Boys and Girls Clubs, the Warwick Symphony Orchestra, the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center and Bridgemark recovery services will speak. A group from the Warwick Symphony Orchestra will also perform during the event that will include pasta stations, a carving station and a cash bar.

There are no tickets or charge to attend, although there is a suggested $75 donation to benefit the charitable foundation. A number of individuals and corporations have already donated and, with the contribution of his campaign funds, Avedisian is hopeful of launching the fund with more than $35,000.

Mark Russell, who has served as Avedisian’s campaign manager since he first ran for City Council, and his wife Janet are co-chairing the event committee. Mark will serve as master of ceremonies tonight and, naturally, Avedisian will speak. He is expected to highlight his term in office but, as he has said, he will thank Warwick.
