Students in the spotlight at Bain Summer Theater program

Thursday afternoon was a perfect day for the students in the Bain Summer Theater program to present the culmination of their many weeks of hard work in an outdoor theater setting on the grounds of Hugh B. Bain Middle School.

Under the direction of faculty member Maribeth Orabone, three student directors (Jeny Daniels, Nora Madison and Sara Sprague), along with their cast, presented three fables made humorous - two familiar and one not quite as familiar.

Amy Cordon, Makayla Maloney, Mia Leaman, Isabella Ba, Sara Sprague, Jeny Daniels, Israel Perez and Adam Maloney had their audience laughing at their “on-stage" antics throughout each of the performances, which lasted just under 10 minutes each and included costumes, props and a basic set.

The three fables were "Rapunzel," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Secret." Despite the humor in each fable, there was an underlying message, which was evident in each of the three performances.

Proud of her students: Bain faculty member Maribeth Orabone looks on proudly from "the wings" of the outdoor theater, as the first fable, "Rapunzel," begins. (Herald photos by Jen Cowart) Bain Summer Theater 2: A complete performance: Each of the three performances included costumes, props and accessories, such as the ones seen here in the performance of "The Ugly Duckling." Bain Summer Theater 3: Their biggest fans: An audience of family, friends and Hugh B. Bain faculty members began to gather on the lawn well before the shows began, ready to cheer on the performers. Bain Summer Theater 4: An important message: The ugly duckling confronts those who are taunting her for being different during one scene of the show. Bain Summer Theater 5: Good advice: The ugly duckling receives advice and a directive from a mysterious old woman before later turning into a beautiful swan. Bain Summer Theater 6: Can you keep a secret: One of the three sisters in "The Secret" shouts her secret into a well, hoping that no one can hear. Bain Summer Theater 7: The things you see: As the days go by in "The Secret," a wild chicken is seen passing by. Bain Summer Theater 8: Two roles: One of three student directors in the summer theater program, Sara Sprague, is seen acting out her role in "The Secret."
