Baron joins Rams after long wait

The wait is over: Billy Baron (Hendricken) can now assume his place in the lineup for the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team.
After missing the first 11 games of the season due to NCAA transfer rules since coming over from the University of Virginia, the son of head coach Jim Baron received an early Christmas gift when he made his debut in Keaney blue against Providence on December 23.
It wasn’t the smoothest start for Baron and the Rams, though, as the Friars controlled the game from the tip until the final horn and walked out of the Ryan Center with an 80-61 victory.
Rocky beginning aside, the addition of the younger Baron has been a positive sign for URI in a season that hasn’t gone so well thus far.
Baron’s best performance since returning to action was in a 78-72 double-overtime win over Boston College on January 2, leading all scorers with 24 points on the day.
As for cracking the starting lineup, that frontier was crossed last Saturday when the Rams took on Duquesne in a 78-71 loss. Baron contributed 14 points in 32 minutes of play for Rhode Island in the losing effort.
For the season, Baron is currently second on the team with 13.6 points per game and is third with 5.3 rebounds per game.

Degnan, Rufful, Palumbo also playing well

Brendan Degnan (Hendricken) is making the most of his senior season at Wheaton, leading the 8-6 Lyons in scoring with 16.1 points per game. In addition, Degnan also tops the team in minutes per game with 29.7 and is second in three-point percentage (37.5) and assists (28).
David Rufful (Hendricken) has been deadly from behind the arc for Dartmouth, shooting 43.5 percent from three-point land for the Big Green, who are currently 4-13 as they enter Ivy League play. Rufful has also added a defensive aspect to his game; his 18 steals lead the team, with a season high of four in a 67-59 loss to Bucknell on January 3.
Ryan Palumbo (Vets) leads Roger Williams in steals with 16, despite missing five games for the Hawks, who climbed above the .500 mark with a 59-56 triumph over Wentworth last Saturday.
