The undefeated Hawks beat the Cranston East Thunderbolts 5-2 in Division I baseball at Ray Pepin Field at Bishop Hendricken High School on Thursday afternoon.

Hendricken ace and Central Connecticut State commit Randy Reyes pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out three while Cranston East ace and Coppin State signee Giovanni Canales hurled 5 2/3 innings and fanned four.

Hendricken senior and UMass Amherst commit Kevin Gower had two hits and knocked in two runs, while David Bordieri Jr., a Fairleigh Dickinson signee, added a walk, and a two-run go-ahead double in the sixth.

“We played a good game,” Hendricken manager Ed Holloway said. “We faced a good pitcher today and pitching is the name of the game. And he’s tough, and we did a good job and we hung in there.”

Noah Rennick, a senior second baseman, put the Bolts up 1-0 when he led off the top of the third inning with a solo home run over the left field wall.

Gower evened the game at 1 in the bottom of that inning when he belted an RBI single to right field, which scored Colin Lemieux, a sophomore, from second base.

In the fifth, the Hawks drew a 2-1 advantage when Gower socked an RBI double to right, which scored Danny Rice III, a sophomore.

Then, in the top of the sixth, East tied the game at 2 when Quinn Lanigan, a senior, rocketed a one-out double past the pitcher, and scored Robenson Antoine Jr. from third.

However, East squandered a bases-loaded opportunity after that when Hendricken senior Christian Tejada came on to pitch in relief of Reyes and earned two huge strikeouts where he fanned both Caleb Joubert and Zachary Cole.

“Christian did a great job,” Hendricken manager Ed Holloway said. “We brought him in, in a tough spot. Bases loaded. He got two big strikeouts there, which was key. If he comes in that situation and doesn’t do the job, they potentially have a big inning there, but he shut them down. Two key strikeouts and he did a great job for us.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Hendricken got to Canales when Bordieri Jr. socked a two-run double to shallow left and scored both Josh Stravato and Xavier Quezada, and upped the Hawks cushion to 4-2.

Next, Hendricken tacked on another run when Lemieux flied out to deep right, which allowed Bordieri to score all the way from second, after tagging up and going to third, and then coming home after an error on the relay into the infield.

“In the sixth inning, any pitcher’s going to tire and we were able to come back after they tied it,” Holloway said. “We got out of a bases-loaded jam and came back and scored three runs there, which was big. It was a good game for us against a good pitcher.”

Hendricken improves its league record to 14-0 with the win. The Hawks host Coventry (6-7) next on Wednesday at 4 pm.
