Hawks bounce back from slow start, overpower Mounties

The Bishop Hendricken Hawks beat the Mount St. Charles Mounties, 4-1, on Friday night at Thayer Arena.

Hawks’ goalie Patrick Gribbin and Mount St. Charles keeper Michael Hauswirth had 15 saves apiece.

Nineteen seconds into the contest, Mount St. Charles took a 1-0 lead when Alex Pratt scored with a wrister after assists from Brian Simpson and Bailey Thibeault.

After that hiccup, Hendricken’s Gribbin didn’t let another puck past him.

“I think he’d like to have that first one back himself,” Hendricken head coach James Creamer said. “I don’t think he was fully into it, but a credit to him, he came back, and he was mentally tough and made great saves for us in the end.”

The slow start wasn’t anything new for the Hawks.

“We haven’t had a lot of luck in the first minute of our last four or five games, but a credit to our guys, they stuck with it and they didn’t’ get down and they just kept going,” Creamer said.

With 6:38 remaining in the period, freshman Andrew Haxton passed to Tyler Brown, who rocketed a shot on net, but it was denied by Hauswirth.

Then, with two minutes remaining, the Hawks tied the game at 1 when junior forward Cameron Toussaint skated in front and fired a wrister past the Mount St. Charles goalkeeper for an unassisted goal.

Three minutes and 46 seconds into the second period, Hendricken’s Matt Dumond assisted to junior defenseman Jacob Paolino and he put the biscuit in the basket, which gave Hendricken a 2-1 advantage.

“Jake needs to play well for us to be successful and I think when he’s playing his best we’re a better team,” Creamer said. “I thought he did a good job today. I think there were some points in the game he would probably want back, but the same thing, he’s mentally tough and he came back, and he played, and he just got better as the game went on and we’re a much better team when Jake plays like that. So, we hope to see more of that.”

About a minute later, Mount St. Charles junior forward and leading scorer Brendan Shandley went in on a breakaway, but was snubbed by Gribbin.

After that, Hauswirth, the sophomore, stopped shots from Hendricken’s Brett Berard and Jax Zaroogian, before capping the string with a spectacular glove save on a shot from Dumond with 2:05 left in the period.

With that, Hendricken took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Early in the third, Hendricken’s Haxton stole the puck and passed down to Dylan Webber, who was denied by Hauswirth.

Down the other end, Mount St. Charles’ Simpson was rejected by Gribbin with 12:25 to play.

Twenty seconds later, Hendricken’s Peter Krekorian skated in front and fired one off the left post.

Then, with 4:59 remaining, Berard coasted in front and ripped a shot past Hauswirth for an unassisted tally, putting the Hawks up 3-1.

Hendricken padded its lead while on a power play at the 12:06 mark when Dumond passed to Paolino, who fired and was denied by Hauswirth, but his teammate, Krekorian, grabbed the rebound and blasted it past the keeper to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.

On Saturday night, Hendricken beat Prout, 7-1. Berard led the way with two goals and two assists.

With the victories, Hendricken improves to 4-1 in the league.
