Broncos hand Hendricken first loss of season

The Burrillville boys hockey team topped Bishop Hendricken 4-3 in overtime last Thursday to hand the Hawks their first loss of the 2018-19 season.

Tied 3-3 heading into the extra period, the Broncos would waste little time securing the win when Ryan Boutiette sent the puck to the top right corner of the net just 41 seconds into play to clinch the victory.

“They were the better team tonight. They were beating us to pucks and we just weren’t good enough,” said Hendricken coach Jim Creamer after the loss. “We made some mistakes … it’s just kind of who we are … when we aren’t working hard then this can happen to us on any given night. They were the better tonight and they deserved to win. I would have loved to have won but looking back on it, they won more battles and were scoring when they needed to score.”

The Hawks thought they had the game won when with 3.2 seconds remaining in the third, a Ryan Mitchell shot deflected off the crossbar and into the goal … however, after a referee timeout, they reversed the call saying that the puck did not actually cross into the net, sending the contest to overtime.

“I (thought it went in) but that’s a judgement call, I was 100 feet away. It’s tough for me to see and the refs were right there. The refs have a tough job as it is,” said Creamer of the reversal.

The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Boutiette and Alex Carlow. However, the momentum was short-lived as the Hawks stormed back in the second and got goals from Jax Zaroogian and Michael Boscia to knot the score at 2-2 heading into the final frame.

Domenic Savastano would score 5:44 into the third to give the Broncos the 3-2 advantage, but Hendricken’s Jacob Tivey would score with 2:48 remaining to tie the score yet again.

Creamer admitted that it was tough playing from behind, along with some other contributing factors heading into Thursday’s contest.

“It was tough, we were off last weekend so we hadn’t played in a quite a bit, we had exams, we had some excuses for why it didn’t happen but at the end of the day they were better than us and it was tough to chase all night,” said Creamer.

Despite the loss, the Hawks still remain in first place and walked away with one point for reaching overtime. However, Creamer hopes to see his club bring a better outing when they face off against rival La Salle this Friday.

“I look at more of our execution and our effort and we were disappointed in that stuff. One point, two points, it doesn’t matter … they came out here and they beat you. They beat us regardless of what the score was. We’ve got to get back to work and get better,” said Creamer.
