Hawks cruise past Falcons for JV title

Hendricken overpowered Cranston West in the junior varsity baseball state championship at Ray Silva Field in West Warwick on Monday, cruising past the Falcons by a final score of 11-6.

The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second, when Brad Theis stole third and trotted home on an error, making it 1-0.

That lead was short-lived, though.

Hendricken answered that West run in a big way in the bottom of the inning, as a pair of three-run home runs from Will Panarello and Josh Stravato highlighted an eight-run second inning for the Hawks. The other two runs in the inning came around to score on a single from left fielder Antonio Petrarca.

West looked to chip away at its seven-run deficit in the third, and it would get one run back on another error on a pick-off throw that allowed Evan Degaitas to sprint home from third to make it 8-2.

However, the Hawks simply had too much offensive firepower.

Jackson Bright scored on an error in the infield in the third inning, and a two-RBI double off the bat of Braydon Dolbashian in the fourth pushed Hendricken’s advantage out to 11-2.

With its back against the wall, West stepped to the dish and produced its best offensive inning in the top of the fifth. It would plate three in the inning, as Theis and centerfielder Matt Carvalho both had RBI singles, while L.J. Felicio recorded an RBI groundout.

Carvalho, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, continued his big day in the sixth, trimming the deficit down to five with an RBI double.

But, West wouldn’t get any closer than that.

Hendricken right-hander Christian Tejada worked around a pair of singles in the seventh to ultimately strike out the side and secure the state crown for the Hawks.
