Boy Scouts plan merit badge college Jan. 12 at RIC

Local Boy Scouts have an opportunity to earn up to two merit badges each when they register and attend the Narragansett Council’s Merit Badge College at Rhode Island College on Saturday, January 21, 2012.

Experts from local companies and organizations such as Raytheon, the RI Dental Association, Cranston and Johnston Fire Departments, RGB Architects, and the RI Society of Professional Land Surveyors will be on hand to help instruct the Scouts. Workshops will be offered in 50 different merit badge categories, including Architecture, Geo-caching, Geology, Inventing, Veterinary Medicine, Weather, and Archeology, to name a few.

The Merit Badge College is a unique opportunity to meet with highly qualified merit badge counselors, earn merit badges and foster development in what could become a lifelong interest. Particular emphasis is given to the hobby and career merit badges, which are difficult to obtain elsewhere. Space is limited, as registration began Nov. 1 online at

“Participating Scouts have told us that the Merit Badge College is a great experience to learn from area experts, gain knowledgeable skills and extremely helpful in earning two merit badges at one time,” said Joe DelPonte, Narragansett Council Merit Badge College chairman.

Cost is $25 per Scout and $20 per adult, payable when you register. The fee includes lunch at Rhode Island College’s Donovan Dining Center and the 2012 Merit Badge College patch. Interested participants can view the course catalog online at
