The campers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick (BGCW) got a surprise on Tuesday afternoon when Mayor Scott Avedisian visited to serve approximately 200 campers lunch.

The summer can be a tough time for families struggling financially, but to ensure all children can have fun and eat healthy this summer, BGCW and the city partnered together to increase the number of campers and to provide all attendees with free lunch. Now, the camp services about 200 campers weekly during the summer.

Avedisian said a couple of years ago, the city was looking to start another summer program, but with the BGCW doing such great work it made more sense to partner with them and augment their work.

“This is a good, good way for kids who may otherwise be alone or watching TV all day to be outside, enjoying nature, and socializing with other kids,” Avedisian said.

Although lunch was supposed to be served at the Masonic Youth Center, due to the high temperatures Tuesday, the campers were moved to the BGCW Oakland Beach facility.

Pictured are Lara D’Antuono, executive director of the BGCW, and Avedisian serving campers lunches.
