To the Editor:
Kudos to director Richard Sylvia and choreographer Teresa Pearson of the Bishop Hendricken High School Arts Department on the recent production of “The Wizard of Oz.” This was a very ambitious undertaking for a high school musical.
Kate Fitzgerald as Glenda the “good witch” has an operatic voice and the lion played by Carlin Fournier has a magnificent baritone. Madeline Morin could play the wicked witch on Broadway right now. Emily Fielding combined acting, signing and dancing skills in the lead role of Dorothy Gale.
The technical and production crews did an amazing job on numerous set changes, lighting and special effects. The orchestra directed by Sean Donnelly was right on all afternoon.
The munchkins rendition of “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” and the high-energy jitterbug routine were highlights of the performance. And where did they find Mayzie for the role of “Toto?”
Perhaps the most moving video is on Facebook. It shows three Hendricken men from the cast singing the litany of saints, praying and leading the munchkins, many of whom were third-graders from area Catholic schools, in cheers before one of the performances.
Well done everyone involved and thanks for a treat before Christmas.
