Break-in, assault suspect held on $50,000 surety

Derek Benjamin, 28, of West Warwick was in court yesterday morning being arraigned on assault and housebreaking charges after he was arrested yesterday on New London Avenue. Police said Benjamin assaulted the woman in her house around 3 p.m., just as her husband was coming home. According to police, the woman who was assaulted called 911 about 3 p.m. to say that her husband was currently holding the assailant on the ground outside the house and waiting for the police. Police said Benjamin ran into her husband outside the house.

Benjamin and the female homeowner both had injuries and were treated at Kent Hospital. Benjamin was charged with breaking and entering, felony assault on the woman and simple assault on the man. He is being held at the ACI on $50,000 surety bail.

Police said it was very fortunate that her husband came home when he did.
