Warwick’s Melanie Brunelle continues to rewrite the Rhode Island College women’s indoor track and field record book.

After impressive performances in the annual United States Coast Guard Invitational in New London, Connecticut, Brunelle again shined for the Anchorwomen during the highly-competitive Springfield College Maroon & White Classic held last weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The one-time Pilgrim High School star captured two first-place finishes – one in the high jump at 1.65m and the triple jump at 11.24m – in the Springfield College event that was an individual meet and did not have any team scoring.

RIC Coach Tim Rudd, who is in his second full season at the Anchorwomen’s helm, was also elated about Brunelle’s third-place finish in the 60m hurdles in 9.78.

For her outstanding performances, Brunelle was named the Little East Conference women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

“It seems as though Melanie gets better and better with each meet,” several RIC fans observed Saturday while watching Brunelle compete. “And to think she’s only a sophomore.”

Youth, Rudd will tell you, is on the Anchorwomen’s side, as Emma Landroche, also of Warwick, won the 200m in 26.57 and had a fourth-place finish in the 60m in 8.19.

Eleni Grammas, yet another RIC sophomore from Cranston, took second place in the 60m (8.07) and second in the 200m (27.00). She was named the Little East Conference women’s track Athlete of the Week. Her twin sister Nicole Grammas finished seventh in the 60m (8.30) and sixth in the 200m in 27.50.

Destinee Barrette, a RIC junior from Warwick, landed a second-place finish in the weight throw with a 15.21m toss. She was also eighth in the shot put event.

So, it’s on to Boston for the Anchorwomen this weekend, who’ll compete in the Boston University Invitational tomorrow (Jan. 27).
