Tri-City Elks

Tri-City Elks continue with the "Classic Car Show" each Thursday evening at 5 p.m. Bring your custom collectible car and show it off or just come and enjoy. Motorcycles welcome. There will be music and food for sale. The Tiki Bar will be open for beverages.

Roger Ceresi & The All Starz Band Aug. 5 in the upstairs hall 8:30-11:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased at the Elks in advance during regular business hours.

Pig Roast Fundraiser for a Veterans Cemetery Elks Monument Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. Entertainment at 5 p.m. Purchase your tickets in advance in the lounge area after 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person.

Movie Night at the Gazebo 

You and your family are invited to a full screen presentation of “The Lego Movie” at the Norwood Gazebo on Pawtuxet Avenue July 21 at 7:45 p.m., presented by the Norwood Neighborhood Association. Bring chairs or blankets and refreshments and snacks. They will provide free genuine-hot-movie popcorn. Bring “bug-spray” and they will have backups if you forget. All are welcome.

Yard Sale

There will be a yard sale held at the William Shields Post, 662 West Shore Road, July 22 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and July 23 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Table space for rent is $15 a day by calling 732-1373. Tons of stuff will be available.

Free Breakfast

A free community lunch and food pantry will be held July 29 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Everyone is invited to participate.

Folk and Celtic Concert

Folk and Celtic singers Atwater-Donnelly will perform in concert July 29 at 7 p.m. at Westminster Unitarian Church, 119 Kenyon Ave., East Greenwich. Cost is $15 adults, $5 12 to 18 years old, free under 12. Tickets are available at www.Westminsteruu.org.

Music on the Village

Woodbury Union Church will hold its annual Music in the Village concert July 30 at 4 p.m. on the lawn behind the church, which is at the corner of Beach Ave. and West Shore Road in Conimicut Village. There will be music provided by the Woodbury Choir, One Voice and local group Bayside Beat. Enjoy a summer evening of great music and fellowship. Free hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided. Feel free to bring something to share as well as a canned good for the local food pantry. This is a rain or shine event (indoors in the event of rain).

Bingo

Bingo will be held Aug. 5 at the St. Kevin’s Church Hall, 333 Sandy Lane, starting and ending with a $100 special. Doors open at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6.

Pops Concert at St. Kevin Church

The Ocean State Summer Pops Orchestra with special guests will be performing live at Saint Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Aug. 12 starting at 7:30 p.m. Guests include the Ocean State Pops singers under the direction of Mark Colozzi, Roger Ceresi with the Pops Orchestra performing Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence,” compositions by RI-based musician and composer Michael Tarro, and the debut of 11-year-old Capri Marandola singing a selection from “Toy Story.” Join them for a night of music ranging from light classical to show music, marches and other favorites. Tickets can be purchased online via credit card at www.osspo.org or can be purchased the night of the performance (cash only) at the door. Ticket prices are $15. Children 12 and under are free.

Yard & Bake Sale

The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary will be hosting a yard/vendor/bake sale Aug. 12 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the JONAH Center in Oakland Beach. Tables for crafters and vendors are still available for $25. Call Debbie at 739-5102 if you are interested in a table.

Summer Travel Basketball League

Every Wednesday night through August 16, the Greater Providence YMCAs will run a summer travel basketball league. Games will tip off at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 pm. This travel league will feature a game on Wednesday nights. Players will be traveling between Kent County, Bayside, Newman and Cranston YMCA. The league is open to boys and girls entering grades 1-8, and all players will be divided into divisions based on the grade they are entering in the fall. Greenwood Church Summer Choir

Sing alongside veteran musicians in an encouraging, low-pressure environment. Have fun singing music you love under the direction of professional staff – all for free. The public is invited to join on Sunday mornings through Aug. 20 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Community Church, 805 Main Ave., Warwick, for an exciting community summer choir. They’ll be singing favorite songs we all know well, so no experience is necessary and no long rehearsals are involved. If you love music you are highly qualified. No commitment or church affiliation is required; you are welcome to sing on any day(s) you wish. Just come to the music room on the second floor of Greenwood Church at 9 a.m. to practice a well-known piece to be presented at 9:30 a.m. This is a great family activity; all ages welcome. Meadowlark Seniors

The Meadowlark Seniors, a social club, will not be meeting July and August. The next meeting is Sept. 7. There will be no meeting Thursday, Sept. 14. All meetings are subject to being cancelled because of inclement weather.

Grandparent Visitation Bill

The Rhode Island Senate has passed the Grandparent Visitation Bill 383. The House of Representatives has not passed their own grandparent bill number 5903. This bill will help many grandparents who have been isolated from their grandchildren. They need everyone to either e-mail or call their representative asking for their vote to pass this bill. They also need everyone to contact Cale Keable who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the Speaker of the House Representative Mattiello. If you are a grandparent or have fond memories of your grandparents, help our Rhode Island grandchildren who have been denied a relationship with their grandparents.

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 6:30 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. The group calls themselves the “Rocky Point Pacers.” Call Cindy at 497-5656 for more details.

Meadowbrook Bingo

Meadowbrook Terrace bingo is held every Friday night at 6 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Snacks will be available. All are welcome.

Bird Feeder Donations

Wild Birds Unlimited, Warwick, annually conducts a feeder swap event, which generates bird feeders for donations within the community. The feeders are completely refurbished and as a result are perfectly functional. The feeder swap has resulted in more than 50 feeders over the past four years and the feeders have been given to local schools, senior centers and assisted living facilities. If you are interested in obtaining a feeder for a deserving destination, contact Richard Del Sesto at 826-0606 or wbuwarwick@yahoo.com.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

As a caregiver for an Alzheimer’s patient, you’re all too familiar with the frustration and heartache that come from trying to stir the memory of someone you love. Physical Fitness Training

A local non-profit will bring organized basketball, nutrition education and physical fitness training to 160-200 youth in Warwick. The program will run through Feb. 28, and players only pay a $25 fee for the entire season. They are a registered 501©3 non-profit, and they are currently close to capacity. The Grange is a fraternal non-profit organization with a special interest in community service. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
