Tri-City Elks

St. Patrick's corn beef dinner will be held March 9 beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be a performance by the Damhsa Irish Step Dancers. Tickets are $15 per person. You must get your tickets in advance; no tickets will be sold at the door.

Meat raffles on Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. There will be four tables loaded with meat and prized. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.  Proceeds will be donated to Rosemary's Wish Kids.

Country line dancing continues from 7-9 p.m. Monday evenings with Lori Enos. Cost is $8 per person. Come kick up your heels and have some fun.

Yoga Classes with Lorraine Blanchard as the instructor. This Vinyasa Yoga flow will embody strength, balance and flexibility. Please bring your own yoga mat. Cost is $6 per person.

Buckeye Brook Coalition Meeting

The Buckeye Brook Coalition's annual meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 4 in the large meeting room of the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane. After a short business meeting, there will be an announcement of upcoming volunteer opportunities, followed by this year’s guest speaker, John Torgan, State Director of The Nature Conservancy in RI. He will discuss current issues of river restorations and fisheries, as well as some of the work that The Nature Conservancy has done in Rhode Island.

Daughters of ISabella

The Norwood Neighborhood Association will hold a general meeting March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. The guest speaker will be Mayor Joseph Solomon, who will present a vision of his administrations goals for the City of Warwick. Also, a Community Police Officer will provide an update crime report on current trends in the neighborhood. Cranston Senior Guild

After a short meeting, Fran Ostendorf, editor of “Jewish Rhode Island,” will talk about the newspaper previously called  “The Jewish Voice.” Fran will explain the format and changes to the paper. There will be refreshments and a raffle. Men and women 55 or older are welcome to join the Cranston Senior Guild. Dues are $12 a year. Cranston residency is not required. On April 3, Alison Bologna will speak about Shri Yoga.

Cookies & Cocktails

Local chefs will be creating delicious desserts using everyone's favorite treat, Girl Scout Cookies, at the Cookies & Cocktails event being held March 7. Attendees will enjoy savory hors d'oeuvres, tasty Girl Scout Cookie creations, and the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. Tickets to this 21 event are $60 per person. The evening will be emceed by the one and only Mario Hilario WJAR.

Fifth Annual Irish Film Feis 

In partnership with the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Fifth Annual Irish Film Feis

Ocean State Orchid Society Meeting

The Ocean State Orchid Society will have a meeting March 9 at 1 p.m. at the Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Trail, (Rte. 2), East Greenwich (enter through door at rear of building). Club member Kyle Fiedler will lead this meeting, entitled Growing Orchids in LECA as a medium.” LECA, or light expanded clay aggregate, is an aggregate made by heating clay to a high temperature in a kiln. Members are asked to bring in a plant that needs re-potting and the club will supply the LECA. There will also be the usual Grow and Show table and raffle. The public is welcome.

West Bay Chorale

The West Bay Chorale will be having their annual pop-up coffeehouse March 9 at 3 p.m. This will be at their new location, St. Kevin’s Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. They have invited some outstanding local talent to perform Latin American Folk songs. Members from the chorale will be performing a variety of songs, poetry and dance as well.

American Legion Riders Post 2 Meat Raffle

The American Legion Riders, RI State Capter Post 2, will be holding a meat raffle at the American Legion Post 2, 2 Legion Way, West Warwick, March 9 at 7 p.m. There will be four rounds of tables and in honor of St. Patrick’s Day the last raffle for each table will be a basket of ingredients for a corned beef dinner.

Academic Decathlon Volunteers Needed

Rhode Island Academic Decathlon is actively recruiting volunteers for their March 10 state competition. Volunteers evaluate the speech and interview skills of high school students or assist with exams and event management. The competition is hosted by CCRI in Warwick, and most volunteers serve from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Training is provided on the day of the event. Reception for Col. McCartney

Retired Col. Stephen M. McCartney, who served as chief of Warwick Police, will be honored at a reception March 14 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza. Chili Cook-off

Corned Beef Dinner and Auction Fundraiser

Southern RI 4-H Fair will hold a corned beef dinner as a fundraiser event March 16 at 5 p.m. at the Metcalf School, 30 Nooseneck Hill Road, Exeter. It's not just a dinner; an auction and a penny social will be held during this event as well. Advanced tickets only; corned beef and cabbage are $12. Meat Raffle

West Bay Anglers are holding a meat raffle every Saturday through March 16, 2019 at the Warwick Firemen’s Club, 750 Warwick Ave. Doors open at 12 noon, raffle starts at 1:30. Tickets are six for $5.

Phantom of the Opera

Have you always wanted to see “The Phantom of the Opera?” How about dinner before, and transportation to the show? No worrying where you are going to park and how far you will have to walk to PPAC. The Kent County YMCA is offering a bus trip to the PPAC to see “Phantom of the Opera,” which also includes a buffet dinner before the show, on March 28. The cost for YMCA members is $80 and the cost for those that are not current members of the Kent County YMCA is $90.  Email Dom Doiron at ddoiron@gpymca.org.

Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announces that preschool registration for the 2019/2020 school year has started. The Title I preschool program is a half-day program held at Oakland Beach Elementary School. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Lippitt, Hoxsie, Park and Norwood areas.  Parents are required to attend three sessions per year for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 4 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences.
