Warwick Rotary

Broadway in Your Backyard

Broadway in Your Backyard will occur March 5 at 5 p.m. Start the evening with a full sit-down meal at the Kent County YMCA. Abiding Courage Exhibition

The opening reception for Abiding Courage, an exhibition celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment, will be held March 5 from 6-8 p.m. The goal of this exhibition is to bring together history and contemporary artwork to inspire viewers to think critically about the right to vote and to encourage participation in our democracy. This exhibition will feature works in a variety of media and individual styles. This exhibit is also part of the Shall Not Be Denied Initiative – helping to enrich our understanding of this pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Awards will be announced at the reception. All receptions are free and open to the public.

Academic Decathlon Volunteers Wanted

The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon is actively recruiting volunteers for their Sunday, March 8 state competition. Serving as judges, volunteers evaluate the speech and interview skills of high school students or assist with exams and event management. The competition is hosted by CCRI in Warwick, and volunteers can serve in the morning starting at 8:30 or the afternoon beginning at noon or both as a “super judge.” Lunch is provided as well as training on the day of the event. Girls Night Out

Girls Night Out: Celebration of Women in Story and Song is being performed March 8, International Women’s Day. The performance will take place at the Southside Cultural Center, 393 Broad St, Providence, at 4 p.m. Featured performers are Valerie Tutson, Carolyn Martino, Katie Latimer and many others. Three-Day Lenten Mission

A three-day Lenten mission led by Rev. Robert Lacombe titled "Going In Search Of Lost Sheep: Evangelizing Lost Catholics" will be held at St. Matthew Church March 10, 11 and 12. The mission begins at 6:30 p.m. with Holy Mass, Mission talk by Rev. Lacombe and ends with Confession. All are welcome.

Warwick Women’s Club

The GFWC (General Federation of Women's Clubs) Warwick Women's Club will hold its monthly meeting March 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center in Warwick. The Warwick Women's Club is a civic/community-minded club that provides funds for local organizations such as the EBCC and provides services and support for organizations such as the Norwood Boys' and Girls' Club, R.I. Mentoring, Project Undercover, FRIENDS WAY and House of Hope. Spring Literacy Tutor Training

You can make a difference in someone’s life by giving the gift of literacy. By giving just a few hours per week, you can help develop a stronger community while helping your neighbors improve their skills. The Last Execution

The 1916 Committee will present Paul Caranci, author of The True Story of Rhode Island’s Last Execution. He will tell the story of Irish immigrant John Gordon, who was hanged on February 14, 1845, the last person executed in the state. Caranci’s multimedia presentation will describe how the anti-Catholic and anti-Irish immigrant bias of the time factored into Gordon’s arrest and conviction. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 13 at the RI Irish Ceilide Club, 50 America Street, Cranston. This will be followed by music in the downstairs pub with the band Star Creek. This event is open to the public.

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held March 19 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway at 6:30 p.m. This will be the last meeting before the breakfast on March 28. Meat & Lobster Raffle

Warwick Fireman’s club, 750 Warwick Avenue holds a meat and lobster raffle every Saturday until March 21. Doors open at noon. In addition to meat and lobster tables there are a large screen TV, money raffles and gift table.

East Greenwich Art Club

The East Greenwich Art Club will have an exhibit, "Landscapes, Photos and Still Lifes, Oh My,” through March 27 at the East Greenwich Free Library, 82 Peirce St., East Greenwich. The library is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Asbury Church 90th Anniversary Celebration

As part of the 90th Anniversary Celebration, Asbury United Methodist Church will host an organ and violin concert March 28 at 3 p.m. at the church located on the corner of Fair Street and Ann Mary Brown Drive. Men’s Senior Softball

Registration is now underway for men 57 and older to join the Warwick Senior Softball League, a recreational league whose priorities are fun, safety and friendly competition. You do not have to be a Warwick resident to join. All games (double headers) begin at 9 a.m. and are played in City Park in Buttonwoods of Wednesday mornings. The fee is $25. Conimicut annual spring fling

The Annual Conimicut Village Spring Fling Fundraiser is scheduled for April 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Benedict's Parish Hall. The event includes a buffet dinner and dessert, music, door prizes, raffle baskets and silent auction items. Proceeds from this event go to the purchase of the beautiful hanging plants that adorn the village all summer, the plants in the 15 sidewalk planters, someone to care for the flowers all summer and also funds replacement of U.S. flags that fly from May through November. Tickets are $30 per person ($12 for children ages 11 and under). Tickets are available at St. Benedict’s Parish Hall on the CVA website www.conimicut.org or by calling 524-8404. New Singers Wanted

Join West Bay Chorale as they continue their 40th season. Sexual Assault Support Group

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center announced the start of their sexual assault support group, Our Voices. Our Voices is a psycho-educational empowerment group for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, intimate partner sexual violence, and sexual violence.  The first session will begin in February. For a group screening or more information call 738-9700.

They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. Art Supplies Needed

Thrive Behavioral Health’s Housing First Program would greatly appreciate donations of used or new art supplies to support therapeutic art activities for the chronically homeless population and those who struggle with mental illness. Creating art reduces stress, anxiety, fears and depression in people with mental illness and raises a person's quality of life. EBC Center Volunteers Needed

Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency located in Warwick serving victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. They are currently in need of volunteers to assist with answering their hotline and/or providing childcare while clients attend weekly support groups. All In A Chord Meetings

All In A Chord, an a capella chorus singing four-part harmony, is now meeting at 2-4 p.m. every Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 389 Greenwich Avenue, downstairs in the adjacent building. Anyone who loves to sing is welcome to come and visit any Tuesday afternoon. They are a group of friendly women with a common interest to sing. No experience is necessary except to be able to sing on key and have fun doing so. They sing music from the ’40s, show tunes, patriotic medleys and holiday music. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to anyone 14 years of age or older interested in joining the corps.

New Counseling Program Available

Women’s Auxiliary

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Greenwich Bay Women’s Club

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Green Airport Military Lounge Seeks Volunteers

The Rhode Island Military Organization (RIMO) Military Lounge at T.F. Green Airport is seeking volunteers to staff the lounge. Open 12 hours every day, the primary goal of the lounge is to provide a welcoming place for military service members, veterans and their families to relax and regroup during their travels. Approaching six years in operation, nearly 15,000 visitors have passed through the lounge doors. Yet, it’s the dedicated volunteers who keep the lounge open, clean, stocked and comfortable while providing a welcome smile and warm greeting to each visitor. Volunteers are asked to work four-shifts and may select their own work schedule but are asked to dedicate a minimum of four hours per month. Also, volunteers enjoy free parking at the airport. A great opportunity to give back to the community and thank our active duty and veterans for their service. All volunteers are required to fill out the RIMO application, acquire a background check, and attend a short training class. New volunteers can begin the process by contacting the RIMO office at 921-4393.
