’Canes ride defense to second win of season

The Warwick Vets boys’ lacrosse team has had its share of growing pains – especially on the offensive end – this season, but the ’Canes showed off their defensive prowess on Thursday.

Vets knocked off East Providence 6-0 to improve to 2-4 in Division III. The Townies dropped to 0-6. Mickenzey Pacheco scored two goals, while David Valladolid, Tim Chaffee, Eric Procaccini and Brad Robert had one apiece. Chris Defreitas turned away 19 shots in net.

The ’Canes have two more winnable games this week. They play winless Chariho today on the road at 3:30 p.m., then host one-win Cranston East on Thursday.

Titans still rolling

The Toll Gate boys’ lacrosse team is making a statement.

The Titans defeated Lincoln 6-5 in overtime on Wednesday for their fourth straight win to open the season. At 4-0, they’re one of just two undefeated teams in Division III along with Tiverton/Rogers, which is 5-0.

Lincoln, considered one of the better teams in the division, fell to 5-2.

Kyle Palumbo scored the game-winner for Toll Gate on a pass from Andrew Zelano late in OT. Zelano also added a goal during regulation, while Anthony Ottone and John Sullivan had two goals each. Jackson Burgos stopped 17 shots.

’Canes keep winning

Last week was good to the Warwick Vets baseball team.

The ’Canes went 3-0, while out-scoring their opponents 31-1. They beat Davies 18-0 on Monday, took down Classical 1-0 on Thursday and then crushed Juanita Sanchez 12-1 on Friday.

Vets is now 6-1 and in first place in Division II-Central, a half-game ahead of East Providence. Only 6-0 North Smithfield has a better mark in all of D-II.

The Classical win was a big one. The Purple are 6-2 and were tied with Vets entering the game. The ’Canes got a complete-game, six-hitter from Dan Greaves, as he struck out seven batters in the process, and he also had the game-winning hit – an RBI double in the fifth that plated Jeremy Batista for the only run of the game.

The ’Canes host Mt. Pleasant today before another big game – at East Providence on Thursday. The Townies handed Vets its only loss.
