Local high school culinary students will compete in the 2017 Rhode Island Seafood Cookoff, hosted by the Chariho Area Career & Technical Center, on Wednesday, May 3, from 3-5 p.m.,

and the public is invited to attend.

Student teams from the Chariho Area Career & Technical Center, the Cranston Career & Technical Center, the Regional Career and Technical Center at Coventry High School, the Warwick Area Career & Technical Center, and the William M. Davies, Jr. Career & Technical High School will be serving up their own original recipes for locally caught scallops. The audience will vote for their favorite dish, and the winning team will have their recipe featured at Trio Restaurant, 15 Kingstown Road, Narragansett, as well as be treated to lunch at Avvio Restaurant in Cranston, both courtesy of the Newport Restaurant Group.

“We are so proud to support the next generation of talented chefs,” said Casey Riley, chief operating officer, Newport Restaurant Group. “Rhode Island is known for our great seafood and wonderful cuisine, and we look forward to featuring the winning team’s recipe at Trio restaurant.”

The scallops for this event are generously donated by Wild Atlantic Seafood, 81 Point Avenue, Wakefield.

“This event is a great opportunity for high school culinary students to get experience working in a fast-paced environment and preparing local seafood for the public. And the public has a chance to taste some new recipes for scallops that they can try at home,” said Lori Pivarnik, University of Rhode Island Seafood Safety Outreach/Research Coordinator.

The event is free to attend, but RSVPs are required. Please call Rhode Island Sea Grant at 874-6805 or email  rhodeislandseagrant@gmail.com. The Chariho Area Career & Technical Center is located at 459 Switch Road, Wood River Junction in Richmond.

Sponsors of the 2017 Rhode Island Seafood Cookoff are the Chariho Area Career & Technical Center, Rhode Island Sea Grant, the Cooperative Extension Food Safety Education Program in the URI Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences, the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, Newport Restaurant Group, and Wild Atlantic Seafood.
