Catherine L. Sutton
Catherine L. Sutton, 83, of Newburyport, Mass., passed away peacefully on Monday, May 7, in the company of her loving son and daughter. She was the wife of the late H. Theodore “Ted” Sutton who died in 2005.
Catherine was born in Providence, RI, on January 19, 1929, and is the daughter of the late John and Catherine Langton. She was devoted to her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa A. Sutton of Amesbury, Mass., and her son John T. Sutton and his partner Martin Mendoza of Pflugerville, Texas. She is lovingly known as “Bee” by her three grandchildren Daniel, Charles and Alexandra St. Pierre of Amesbury, MA, who adored their grandmother. Catherine is also survived by one sister Joan Gerules and her husband Ernest Gerules of Marlton, NJ; her sister-in-law Jane P. Sutton and her partner MaryAnn Lautt of Bristol, PA; her niece Pamela Smith and family of Haddon Heights, NJ, and nephew Timothy Gerules and his family of Germany.
A 1948 graduate of Rhode Island College of Education, she was a dedicated elementary school teacher in the Medford, NJ, and Providence and Warwick, RI school systems. After her retirement, she and her late husband relocated to Newburyport where they were the proprietors of Ted Sutton’s Captains Galley, a seasonal breakfast and lunch restaurant on the Merrimack River in Amesbury. Catherine also loved current events, history, reading, knitting, baking, puzzles, games, road trips, coastal drives, and bargain hunting. During the past two years, she was an active resident of Atria Merrimack Place and was best known for her outgoing personality, keen sense of humor, and zest for life; including her passion for puzzles, which she shared with her dear friend Josephine “Jo”. Many thanks go out to the management, staff, volunteers, and residents at Atria whom collectively supported Catherine and her family during her illness, particularly the last week of her life.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 33 Green Street, Newburyport, Mass.
