Knights finding success on Florida trip

The CCRI Knights continued their games in Florida on Wednesday, taking on Prairie State from Chicago, Illinois. The Knights took the first game by a score of 6-4 and the second game by the score 8-2. The two victories improved the Knights to 2-1 on the season.

Game 1: CCRI- 6 Prairie State 4

In his first start of the season, Steve Noti (Warwick, Rhode Island) came out the gate firing. He pitched six innings while striking out 11 batters. On the day, he allowed a total of eight baserunners, three of them coming from hits. He surrendered three earned runs, but the Knights were in a comfortable position to hold off the win. Max Marcotte (Coventry, Rhode Island) was called in to close out the game, only allowing one hit, one walk and one run. He sat down two batters and recorded the final three outs, securing the Knights a 6-4 win. Marcotte was awarded the save on the day.

Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, Oklahoma) kick started the Knights’ offensive attack. Brooks had a perfect day in the stat book, going 4-for-4, recording three singles and a double. He had one RBI and two runs. Austin Davis (Hollywood, Florida) went 2-for-3 with two singles, one RBI, one run and a walk. Deiviz Lara Lara (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), Jasiah Hatch (East Providence, Rhode Island) and Robert Paulino (Miramar, Florida) had the other three RBIs on the day, giving the Knights six runs.

Game 2: CCRI- 8 Prairie State 2

The Knights continued to combine offense and defense in the second game of the doubleheader. Their offense had a strong game, scoring eight runs. Shane Kittila (Warwick, Rhode Island) got the start, and was able to come out with the victory.

Shane Kitilla had a strong outing in the second game of the doubleheader. He pitched six of seven innings in the game, striking out four batters and giving up only two runs. He picked up his first win of the season. Dave Simmons (Warwick, Rhode Island) pitched the final inning in relief and did not allow a hit, closing out the game. He was not awarded a save as it was not a save situation for him.

Dylan Brooks continued to see the ball well. He had three doubles on the day, driving in three runs. Matt Boelter (West Warwick, Rhode Island) added two hits on the day with one RBI. Edwin Pichardo (Hollywood, Florida) had another great game at the plate, getting two more hits on the day. Garnell Ball (Bridgeport, Connecticut) had a very strong game at shortstop, making his debut for the Knights.

The Knights took part in another doubleheader in Florida on Thursday, taking on Schenectady Community College and Rainy River CC. The Knights swept the doubleheader, winning the first game, 11-0, and the second game, 2-1. The victories brought the Knights’ record to 4-1 on the season.

In the first game, Matt Kennedy (Johnston, Rhode Island) pitched five innings of shutout baseball. He got the win on the shortened game after the 10-run rule came into play. In the second game, Elijah Dressel (Warwick, Rhode Island) started the game and pitched well, while Simmons (Warwick, Rhode Island) got the win out of the bullpen.

Game 1: CCRI-11 Schenectady-0

Matt Kennedy started off the afternoon great for the Knights. He started the first game of the day, and pitched masterfully. Kennedy only gave up two hits on the afternoon. He struck out eight batters over five innings. Due to the great pitching, the Knights did not need to use any relief pitchers on the day, with Kennedy tossing a complete game. The Knights’ bats were on fire, giving Kennedy a large lead. Eventually, the lead rose to 11-0, bringing the 10-run rule into effect. Kennedy saw out the game and gave the Knights the 11-0 victory, and giving himself his first win on the season.

The Knights’ bats were on fire in the first game. In the five-inning game, the Knights were able to pound out 17 hits. Edwin Pichardo (Hollywood, Florida) went 4-for-4, Ernesto Figueroa (Providence, Rhode Island) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Austin Davis (Hollywood, Florida) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. The Knights’ offensive attack left not much work to do for Kennedy pitching, but the work he did was great. The victory brought the Knights’ record to 3-1 on the season.

Game 2: CCRI- 2 Schenectady- 1

In the second game, the Knights had a new opponent and found a much tougher game. Elijah Dressel got the nod on the mound, and had a stellar performance. He gave up one hit and one run over four innings. Over his outing, he was able to strike out seven batters. The Knights turned to Dave Simmons out of the bullpen after the fourth inning. Simmons followed up Dressel’s great outing with a strong outing of his own. Simmons pitched three innings of one-hit ball to keep the Knights in the game. The Knights were able to find two runs late and Simmons was awarded the win, his first on the year.

The Knights’ bats were asleep until the sixth inning, when they needed to score. Down 1-0, the Knights were able to find two quick runs in the sixth. Ernesto Figueroa came through again for the Knights, having two hits on the day. He alertly was able to score the game-winning run on a wild pitch by Rainy River. The Knights were able to squeak out a win with their pitching keeping them in the game.
