The CCRI Knights traveled to Groton, Connecticut, to take on the Pointers of UCONN Avery Point in a Region XXI Battle.  The teams split the doubleheader at a game apiece. The split brings the Knights’ record to 22-4 overall and 1-3 in Region XXI play.

Game 1: CCRI -1 UCAP-11

The Knights did not fare well in the first game. UCAP was able to score early and often. The Pointers scored one run in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. The Knights were unable to mount a comeback and the Pointers continued to score. The Knights were able to get a run across in the fifth inning by an Edwin Pichardo (Hollywood, Florida) groundout, which scored Joe Michael (Johnston, Rhode Island). The Pointers were able to close out the game comfortably, leading to an 11-1 loss for the Knights.

Dave Simmons (Warwick, Rhode Island) started the game on the mound for the Knights. He went two innings, giving up three earned runs. Cam Albin (Pawcatuck, Connecticut) and Shane Kittila (Warwick, Rhode Island) each pitched two innings in relief of Simmons. Both pitchers were unable to keep UCAP from scoring.

The Knights did not manage much at the plate. They scattered three hits over the seven innings of play. Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, Oklahoma), Pichardo and Robert Paulino (Miramar, Florida) came up with the only hits for the Knights. Pichardo was able to get the only RBI of the game.

Game 2: CCRI- 4 UCAP- 2

The second game went much better for the Knights. They left all their scoring in the first inning, and were able to come out with the win. In the inning, Deiviz Lara (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) singled with two runners on, plating Paulino. The next batter, Michael, caught a hold of one and sent it over the left field fence, scoring Brooks and Lara. The Knights had jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and did not let UCAP come back. The Pointers hit two solo home runs over the next seven innings, but were unable to threaten the Knights’ lead. CCRI held on for the 4-2 victory.

Steve Noti (Warwick, Rhode Island) was magnificent on the mound for the Knights, pitching a complete game. Noti pitched seven strong innings, scattering four hits, while striking out 12 batters. He gave up two earned runs, leading the Knights to victory.

At the plate, the Knights were led by Sam Franco (Cranston, Rhode Island), Pichardo and Michael, who each chipped in with one hit. Michael hit a home run and totaled three RBIs. Lara also recorded an RBI for the Knights.
