FROM STAFF REPORTS The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team headed to Middletown, NY to take on the Orange County Community College Colts. The Knights trailed by 18 points at halftime but overcame the deficit in dramatic fashion to win 81-79. The victory improves their season record to 4-2 record overall and 3-0 in Region XXI play.

CCRI came up against a scrappy and hot shooting Lions team that exploited a slow to react Knights defense. Gateway took an early lead and would grow that lead throughout the first half. The Lions saw success driving the lanes then kicking the ball out to the flanks for open three-pointers. The Knights were not reacting quick enough and found themselves on the wrong end of a 40-22 score line at halftime.

Needing some presence on defense, Head Coach Rick Harris introduced freshman Logan Grosek (Yarmouth). Grosek played 14 of the 20 second half minutes and injected intensity on both sides of the court for CCRI. This sparked the rest of the Knights and the comeback was on.

Within three minutes, the Knights cut the 18-point deficit to 10 points and would later tie the game up with 10:21 left in regulation, 58-58. Four minutes later CCRI would enjoy their first lead of the second half, 70-64.

With 12.9 seconds on the clock, sophomore co-captain Elijah Lewis (Bridgeport, CT) found fellow co-captain sophomore Jeremy Remigio (Providence) down low for a layup and the foul, tying the game up at 79-79. Remigio couldn’t complete the thee point play but on the ensuing rebound, freshman Mikey Gamble (Hartford, CT) secured the round, quickly putting the ball back up off the glass and in to take an 81-79 lead with about 10 seconds remaining.

Gateway still had plenty of fight in them as they would battle back, tying the game at 73-73 with 1:44 left on the clock and later taking a 79-77 lead with 27.2 second remaining.

Gateway got the ball to the halfway line and called a timeout with 5.4 seconds left in the game. The Lions set up a straight away three to win the game at the buzzer but the ball did not drop as CCRI would win the nail bitter 81-79.

The Knights were led by Mikey Gamble’s game leading 24 points with seven rebounds, two steals and one assist. Freshman Mitchel Noresca (East Providence) led the team with 15 rebounds and added 10 points and one assist for his second double-double of the year. Elijah Lewis contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Logan Grosek chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block off the bench.

Coach Harris commented, “Another great comeback tonight versus Gateway. Kids just kept playing hard and grinding it out. Lot of big plays made the in the second half. I thought Logan Grosek and Mitchel Noresca set the pace for us to start the second half. Their inside play gave us an element that Gateway had not seen in the first half. Two big shots by Jeremy Remigio and Mikey Gamble to finish the game. Won’t forget this one, but have to move on and prepare for MassBay on Thursday. Hoping we can put two good halves of basketball together.”

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team will next be in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they host the MassBay Community College Buccaneers.
