Knights win in Florida

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Chain of Lakes park in Titusville, FL to continue their early season Spring Training trip.  On their second day the Lady Knights faced the Vikings of Itasca and the Cyclones of St. Cloud Technical Community College from St. Cloud, MN for the second day in a row. On Saturday the Lady Knights beat to Itasca 10-1 in five innings but lost to St. Cloud Tech 10-2 in five innings. With the split CCRI improves to 1-3 for the season.

In the circle for the Lady Knights in Game 1 was freshman Emily Drainville (Rumford) earning her first start in a Lady Knights uniform. Drainville pitched very well in her first outing throwing five innings of one-run ball allowing five hits while working her way around six walks. Her command was not where it will be after more experience on the mound. However, she was masterful in working her way out of trouble to minimize any damage while her offense picked her up in a big way to help escort here to her first collegiate victory.

Offensively for the Lady Knights freshman Alexis Baffoni (Coventry) hit a grand slam in her first collegiate at bat. Baffoni hit a towering shot to right center field wit the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. It was her only hit of the game but she made it count. Co-captain Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester) went 2-3 with a single and her third Home Run in two days with two runs scored and two RBIs. Freshman Haylie Wellman (Ashaway) had another great game at the plate going 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and a run scored. The trio of Co-captain Raevyn Watson (East Providence), Hannah Northup (Warwick) and Sara Steinkamp (Coventry) each added a hit and a run scored to the Lady Knights’ offensive outburst. This was great team win with many Lady Knights contributing to their first victory of the year.

In the circle for the Lady Knights in their second game was Sophomore Co-Captain Dayna Jackvony (Cumberland) who had to deal with the line-up that had scored 18 runs versus CCRI a day prior. Jackvony did not back down from the challenge but the bats for St. Cloud proved to be just as potent today. She pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs on eight hits, walking three but striking out four batter to take the loss. The Lady Knights knew they were going to have to score some runs to win this game but after their 10-run outburst in the first game of the day their bats went silent and could not provide Jackvony much run support.  Freshman Kelsea Moran (Central Falls) relieved Jackvony for 1/3 plus inning allowing one run on three hits.

Offensively for the Lady Knights freshman Emily McNeil (West Warwick) was the biggest contributor with a two-run home run, her second in two days but those were the only runs that CCRI scored in this game. Wellman had a single and a run score.  Steinkamp added a single but that is all the Lady Knights could muster in the second game of the day as they fell by the final count of 10-2 in the fifth inning.

The Lady Knights will face Macomb Community College from Warren, MI at 9:30a.m. Sunday the 8th and then Bay College from Escanaba, MI at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville, FL.
