City comprehensive plan is topic of tonight’s open house
Mayor Scott Avedisian is encouraging residents and the business community to attend a public open house tonight to afford people the opportunity to review and comment on the city’s Comprehensive Plan before a final draft is submitted to the Planning Board later this month.
The open house will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road. The draft plan will also be available for review online starting Wednesday at www.warwickcompplan.com.
Residents are advised that a second open house originally scheduled for Saturday has been postponed and will be rescheduled.
The new comprehensive plan, called “21st Century Warwick: City of Livable Neighborhoods,” contains an overall vision that embodies Warwick’s unique sense of place, culture and heritage, and establishes a set of goals, policies and actions to implement the vision. The plan is organized into a series of “elements,” or topic areas, including natural resources, historic and cultural resources, open space and recreation, housing and neighborhoods, economic development, transportation and circulation, services and facilities, land use, and “resilience,” an element focusing on how best to adapt to increased hazards from flooding and other potential impacts of climate change.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for citizens of Warwick to discover and help shape the development of the city’s Comprehensive Plan, which is a 20-year strategic plan that sets the framework for socially responsible, sustainable growth and development that improves the overall health, welfare and prosperity of our community,” said Planning Director William J. DePasquale Jr.
The open house is the latest in a series of activities, including an online survey, ward-specific public workshops, topical workshops and public planning meetings, that have been held to encourage the public’s input and involvement since development of the plan began roughly a year and a half ago. An advisory committee, which serves as a sounding board for the planning team, has been meeting regularly as well.
Development of the plan is being paid for in part with funding from the Statewide Planning Program’s Planning Challenge Grant Program.
