West retains City Cups

The Cranston West lacrosse teams continued their City Cup dominance with a pair of victories over rival Cranston East at Cranston Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons’ girls’ lacrosse team (6-2) held off the ’Bolts (5-5) in the second game of the afternoon doubleheader, 9-5, to bring the trophy home.

Senior Grace Ohsberg and junior Jolie Rouleau sparked West to victory with three goals and an assist apiece, while Cosette Lee netted a goal and added an assist, and Hannah Lee and Rachael Beneduce each scored one goal.

West senior goalkeeper Grace Luker led her team’s defensive effort, stopping 10 of 15 shots sent on net.

The West victory spoiled a tremendous offensive effort from East senior captain Sam Levy, who compiled a hat trick of her own to pace all ’Bolts scorers. Levy is now up to 31 goals for the season.

Jorgie Pashalian and Hope Halvarson accounted for the other East goals, and Jillian Fitzgerald chipped in with an assist.

East and West were both set to return to action on Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

West boys hold off East

The Falcons (6-5 in Division II) got out to an early lead and held off the ’Bolts (3-8 in Division III) late, taking the boys’ City Cup for the fifth straight year with a 12-8 victory.

“It’s a huge rivalry and we were able to bring the cup home for the fifth year in a row,” West head coach Justin Erickson said. “It’s a testament to our seniors. They were able to win the cup all four years, which is an impressive accomplishment.”

West raced out to an 8-3 advantage by halftime, before outscoring East, 2-1, in the third quarter to lead, 10-4, at the end of three quarters.

The ’Bolts battled in the final 12 minutes, edging the Falcons, 4-2, in the fourth quarter, but their deficit was too much to overcome as West captured the City Cup trophy once again.

West was led by senior Joey Delmastro, who registered three goals and three assists, and sophomore Mark Doire with three goals, giving him 47 on the season.

“His progression has been great from freshman to sophomore year,” Erickson said of Doire. “He has one of the best shots in the state. The guys respect him as a leader and know that he’s our go-to guy if we need a goal.”

Dean Chiarello also produced two goals, while Didier Ferland, Chris Ohsberg, Joe Fera and Connor Mcmahon netted a goal apiece. Goalkeeper Tim Dillon made 10 saves for West.

Jamison Cannata had a team-high two goals for East, and Jaireal Rodriguez, Ethan Mulholland, Jovanny Cianci, Brennan Haid, Brendan Lanigan and David DaSilva all had one goal.

Cranston East was set to return to division play on Tuesday against Pilgrim, while West was tabbed to do the same on Wednesday at Cranston Stadium against Mount Hope. However, results from both games were unavailable at press time.
