City fireworks planned for July 3 at Oakland Beach

Posted

The City's fireworks display will be held Tuesday, July 3 at the Oakland Beach seawall, Mayor Joseph J. Solomon announced Wednesday.

"Our fireworks display is one of our most popular events each year and offers a wonderful way for family and friends to gather to celebrate our nation's independence," Solomon said. "Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy an evening by the water. I wish all of our residents a safe and happy Fourth of July."

The fireworks will begin at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.), with a rain date of July 5. If rain should be forecast for the 3rd, residents can call 738-2000 or visit the City's social media pages, Facebook.com/WarwickRI and Twitter.com/WarwickRI for updates.

Due to the popularity of the event, attendees are advised that parking restrictions will be strictly enforced and to expect traffic delays, particularly along Oakland Beach Avenue. The fireworks can also be viewed at City Park, which is located off Asylum Road.

This is a great opportunity for Warwick to show off Oakland Beach. Acting Mayor Solomon is wise to brag about it. We should promote it even more than we do because the more popular the event becomes, the more attractive Warwick becomes. Warwick lost 5,800 taxpayers in the last ten years (according the U.S. Census) and we NEED to reverse that trend.

Acting mayor Solomon just introduced THE LARGEST TAX INCREASE ALLOWED BY LAW! I honestly don't think that will attract anyone. I honestly think we will loose more taxpayers as a result. If Warwick "Cut Taxes - Cut Spending", Warwick would attract more taxpayers which would increase our Total Tax Revenue (TTR) and allow for even more tax cuts which are a win-win situation for the City and all taxpayers. It's basic economics that the tax-and-spend political insiders don't seem to understand.

    Happy Summer everyone

What Warwick can't afford is a candidate who promises the world (cut taxes, cut spending) but in almost 4 years as a candidate has FAILED to put pen to paper and tell voters the specifics of his plans as Rick Corrente has.

Rick criticized Joe Solomon for not getting involved in the 2018 budget. Now he wants to try and blame him for Warwicks tax increase. You can't have it both ways Rick, he was either involved in the budget or he wasn't. This also comes 1 year after Rick Corrente called the City Council (led by Joe Solomon) the "hardest working" City Council Warwick has ever had, and "The Taxpayers City Council" for their work on last years budget. Corrente has the audacity to call Joe Solomon a flip flopper? This paragraph alone proves that Corrente has taken every position possible on the budget. Sad!

    Dear Scal1024,

Let me explain so that you will understand. You claim you don't.

Fact 1. I criticized Solomon because Avedisian offered him the opportunity to participate in the budget preparation and he refused! Bad move on his part! The 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab deserve better! As Mayor I would not do that!

Fact 2. Now, several months later, I DO BLAME Solomon for giving Warwick taxpayers THE LARGEST TAX INCREASE ALLOWED BY LAW because he just DID!! (The time frame is about 3 months later.) So you see Scal (as if you didn't already) those were two different decisions both made by Solomon; made at two different times. Both decisions were BAD FOR THE 80,000 TAXPAYERS THAT ARE PAYING THE TAB! ANYONE can see that. Why can't you Scal?? It's not "having it both ways"...but you already knew that. Wish you would stop lying.

Fact 3. A few months ago I absolutely DID call the current City Council "the hardest working Council Warwick has ever had." I stand by that statement today, and yes, part of that Council is Joe Solomon. He was one-ninth of the Council. You see Scal, unlike you, I give credit when it is due and I criticize when that is due. You just complain about everything I do and you lie about it viciously while hiding behind a fake name. I think that is cowardly.

Fact 4. You lied again about me failing to "put pen to paper and tell voters the specifics of his plan." Scal!! This is your worst lie yet! Anyone can go on my web site at "www.correnteformayor.com" and read "The Corrente Plan". You know that Scal! You just don't want the readers to know it. The person without a plan is Joe Solomon. He is the one who hasn't ONCE said HOW he wants to improve Warwick. He just says that he wants to. In a Channel 10 interview last week he said "I'm trying to attract businesses to our community. I'm looking to improve the residents conditions within the City, whether it be through paving; better education; maybe more efficient services". Not ONCE did he say HOW!! Doesn't he even sound like a politician Scal? I HAVE a plan, and I've had one for over 4 years. Joe doesn't. All he has is a henchman named Scal1024 and the support of the political insiders who want more and more tax increases. If all the registered Democrats vote in the primary, I will crush him. If only the political insider vote, it will be the other way around.

Fact 5.Yes Scal, I called acting Mayor Solomon a "flip-flopper" because HE FLIP-FLOPPED! In December 2017 he (and I) supported the beach fees being paid by the beachgoers NOT all Warwick taxpayers. Four months later he reversed that decision. Scal...that is called "flip-flopping'! But you already knew that. Why else would try to cover it up.

For the record I have ALWAYS felt that the beachgoers should pay to clean the beaches AND NOT the 80,000 Warwick taxpayers. It isn't a lot of money but it clearly shows the difference between Joe Solomon (accompanied by his henchman Scal1024) and Rick Corrente, The Taxpayers Mayor! He supports the political insiders. I support the 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab.

Anytime you want to come clean and tell everyone your REAL name, you anonymous coward, I'm sure the readers would appreciate it. It would start to give your words credibility. Until then, all you are is

Fake news. Fake sources. Fake people. Fake names.

    Happy Fourth-of-July everyone.

Keep up the good work, Scal. Every time you correctly and factually explain the many defects in his candidacy, the make-believe mayor replies with more bullying and whining about the use of screen names on this website.

"The 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab..."

There are not 80,000 taxpayers in Warwick. There simply are not that many people paying property and car taxes in the city. And the make-believe mayor has not been "paying the tab" on his residence since 2014.

"As Mayor I would not do that!"

The make-believe mayor will never be elected to office.

" A few months ago I absolutely DID call the current City Council "the hardest working Council Warwick has ever had." I stand by that statement today..."

The make-believe mayor supported the council's FY18 budget decision that resulted in a $4.2 million deficit which the FY19 budget has to cover, and now he is criticizing the council for having to remedy the situation it created that he supported. He is trying to have it both ways, as you correctly point out.

"If all the registered Democrats vote in the primary, I will crush him."

The 2016 election was a Democratic wave in Rhode Island, and he was one of only two Democratic candidates who lost in the entire local and state slate of candidates.

"If only the political insider vote, it will be the other way around."

The make-believe mayor will lose again -- and become the first candidate in a generation to lose to two different mayors -- because of the many defects he has so willingly and repeatedly shown about himself, not because of anonymous "political insiders," from whom he accepted campaign contributions in his losing 2016 campaign.

"It would start to give your words credibility."

No, Scal, it is the facts and provable information that you present to the readers of this website that give you credibility -- and it is the lies, fake data, and fake title that the make-believe mayor has repeatedly posted here that show he is not credible in anything he says.

You and I and thousands of honest, taxpaying voters see through his lies and we will ensure that he is overwhelmingly defeated in the Democratic primary.

Rick, my entire comment was about you not putting pen to paper and giving voters specifics. YOU HAVEN'T DONE THAT. Your website is the same vague bunch of words you've been spewing for almost 4 years.

    For example:

-How much money will you spend in your advertising campaign to promote Warwick? Where will that money come from? Buy a house, get a check...how much money would each rebate be worth? Where does the $ come from to fund this?

-Suspending building permit fees will mean a loss of revenue. How will that be made up without raising taxes?

-You say you want to cut taxes...how will that revenue be made up in the budget when you're already suspending permit fees, spending $ on advertising, cutting rebate checks? How will ALL of that lost revenue be made up? New taxpayers aren't arriving day one and there aren't enough of them to offset the hole you're blowing in the budget.

-Your voluntary pension buyout. How much money would each employee be offered? What employees would qualify for this buyout? How many current employees would be eligible? How then, do you know this would even save money? You're lacking basic information.

Without any of these answers Rick, your plan is NOTHING. In almost 4 years running you still don't have ANY of these answers. These reasons on top of your lying and tax delinquency are the reasons voters will continue to reject your failing, flailing campaign.

You know, Scal, it seems that we're seeing another pattern with the make-believe mayor: He doesn't seem to believe he should be responsible for his statements. You correctly point out that he has never, in four years, actually offered answers for his irresponsible revenue-giveaway schemes. This is a reflection of his own failure to be responsible for the tax payments on his residence, evidence for which readers can find at the city tax assessor's database link by entering 177 Grand View for the address: https://bit.ly/2KL9wDw

By viewing the information on that website, readers will see that the listed owner of the property is Red Stick Acquisitions of Louisiana, which took possession of the property via tax sale in 2016. They will also see that the person listed as paying taxes on the property in 2013 ad 2014 was Clayton Shackleton, from whom the make-believe mayor currently rents his campaign office.

They can also see that the make-believe mayor has also failed to be responsible for the water and sewer bills on the property by visiting this link and entering the same address information: https://bit.ly/2NpHdMC

As shown on this website, an entity called Cove View LLC is listed as the customer [not the make-believe mayor] and currently owes $363.98 for bills dating back to June, 2017.

Despite this clear, factual, and verifiable information, the make-believe mayor has insisted that he has "always" paid his taxes "on time" -- showing that he does not believe in being a responsible taxpayer and willingly compounds his irresponsible behavior by lying about it.

So, it is no wonder that he has no plan for how to fund his delusional schemes that will reduce city revenue while doing nothing to limit spending -- he seems to believe that it will be someone else's responsibility to figure that out, just as other people have been responsible for paying the taxes and use fees on his residence.

Warwick voters are too intelligent to support a candidate who can not even uphold the basic responsibility of paying his taxes.

    Dear Scal,

This question is a fair one.

You ask "How much money will you spend in your advertising campaign to promote Warwick?" Good question Scal. That will depend on the input of the City Council and the Tourism Dept. As you know most of the cost (maybe all) can come from advertisers in the "Welcome to Warwick" magazines and fliers. Corporate sponsors most often eliminate the cost-of-production, so the end cost to the taxpayers should be little or nothing. The results, even if the campaign is only a mild success should increase Total Tax Revenue (TTR) many times over the cost of the program and the added revenue will allow Warwick to Cut Taxes!

The rest of your questions sound like the old you. Attacking me with questions ANYONE can figure out. Scal, if it costs a dollar to make five, don't you think Warwick will find the dollar? I know you do.

Here's a quick example. Let's say we have a "2 year moratorium on building permit fees" (part of The Corrente Plan). Let's say it attracts a person named Scal (not his real name) to decide that now is the time to build that 2-car garage he always wanted. He saves $1,600 (or so) from the building fee elimination and completely understands that he will be paying an additional $450 (or so) per year in real estate taxes FOREVER now that his home is worth more! In four years Warwick gets back MORE fee income than his free-permit cost. PLUS - Warwick receives new fee income FOREVER allowing the City to "Cut Taxes". Scal, even if Warwick had to borrow the upfront money on a credit card, it would be worth it.

    One more example:

"The Voluntary Pension Buyout Plan" (also part of The Corrente Plan")

You asked several questions that all would be answered by our pension insurer. They examine each retiree individually and calculate a different dollar amount (similar to health insurance) for each retiree. Anyone receiving a pension I believe would be eligible and there is no way of telling how many would participate but each pension buyout would be a win for the retiree, if he/she decided to accept it, and a win for the City. The more who accept it, the bigger the win. Texas offered a similar plan. Thousands of retirees benefited from the "cash-now" option and the state saved almost a BILLIONDOLLARS! A win-win for everyone!

I also want a "hiring freeze". No more political kick-back jobs! This will provide job security for our present employees and attrition will reduce Warwicks' payroll as people retire or move on allowing Warwick to "Cut Taxes" because we "Cut Spending".

My website at "www.correnteformayor.com" will answer all of these questions and more and, Scal and if you want respectful debate I am a willing participant.

I did notice that you never ask about Joe Solomons plan. Does he have one? He hasn't stated any. Why haven't you tortured him for not presenting his plan? Tell us why Scal1024. Otherwise it looks like you are a henchman for Solomon.

Happy and safe Fourth of July Scal and everyone.

Rick conveniently ignores CrickeeRavens factual post with links included and skips to previous comments by me. I thought there would be new information but as expected he relies on the Corrente Greatest Hits. An advertising campaign thats paid by others? Perhaps this is why Corrente couldn't properly file his pennysaver ad payment properly. He just assume (like with his taxes) someone else is paying the tab.

Moving on to the voluntary pension buyout Rick has claimee the city will eliminate pension and health care costs with this buyout. Are you suggesting you will buyout the health insurance plan as well? The problem with not knowing the cost per buyout, even an estimate, is again how does Rick Corrente know this will save money?

I also find it embarassing a candidate for mayors "proposal" is to say "$1 spent is worth a $5 return" with ZERO math other than some half baked example he hopes flies over a voters head. Just like he keeps using this "TTR (Total tax revenue) its a way to try and make voters believe that he knows what he's talking about. He doesn't. This is another example of Rick Correntes reckless proposals such as RAISING BEACH FEES on EVERY DRIVING RESIDENT. There has been no cost analysis on this beach fee proposal, yet Rick insists not only will it raise enough revenue to pay employees, but it will also provide money to clean the beaches. Again, if there is no cost analysis on what the beach fee program would cost to run, how does he know it will generate revenue? This is a continues theme in the Corrente campaign. Lies, deception, faulty talking points and a "plan" that will fail this city and blow holes in our budgets for future years. When will Corrente have a REAL CONVERSATION about his "plans"? When will his only response stop being an attack on my use to name on this site.

PS Rick, If Joe Solomon were commenting on here for 4 years about how he knows everything to better our city, I'd hold him as accountable as I am you

Scal, I have to hand it to you -- every time the make-believe mayor responds to you, he manages to humiliate himself even more than he already has [and that's saying something].

    - To your first question of paying for his ad campaign, he replies: "That will depend on the input of the City Council and the Tourism Dept."

So, he's planning to depend on other people to figure out how to pay for something that is already done by the city, proving that he hasn't read the FY19 city budget that sets aside just over $500,000 for economic development and tourism programs which includes -- and excuse the all-caps -- ADVERTISING THE CITY.

The FY19 budget is at this link. Tourism is on page 66/94: https://www.warwickri.gov/sites/warwickri/files/pages/fy19_adopted_general_fund_budget.pdf

    - "Even if Warwick had to borrow the upfront money on a credit card, it would be worth it."

Again, Scal, please excuse the all-caps reply: CITIES DON'T HAVE CREDIT CARDS. Borrowing against future tax revenue is not only short-sighted, but it leads to compounded problems down the road as principal and interest come due.

    - "[I]f you want respectful debate I am a willing participant."

To him, "respectful debate" means he can repeat statements that have been disproven by verifiable facts, attack other commenters for using screen names, and call actual elected officials names.

This is, if not the least intelligent thing he has ever written on this website, among the top two or three...

Oh, wait, I'm sorry, we actually have a new entry for the least intelligent comment by the make-believe mayor: "Why haven't you tortured [Solomon]for not presenting his plan? Tell us why Scal1024. Otherwise it looks like you are a henchman for Solomon.

So now you're "torturing" a declared and once-failed candidate by asking factual questions that he has repeatedly failed to answer with anything approaching credibility?

This only proves that his campaign is a trainwreck and he's the last person to realize it.

I can not wait for the day that we and thousands of our honest, taxpaying neighbors reject his candidacy again.
