Hendricken competes in ‘virtual’ national championship
Coming off its 17-14 upset victory over La Salle in the Division I Super Bowl last month, the Bishop Hendricken football team was entered into a virtual national championship to determine the best high school team in the country.
The ‘Super 25 Virtual National Championship’ is in its third season, and it pits all 50 state champions and 14 at-large teams against each other in a championship bracket, where they will face off in computer-simulated games.
The program to determine the winners was designed by Ken Massey, whose computer models were used to create the BCS rankings for college football in 1999.
Hendricken, which was a 16-seed in the tournament, lost its first-round match-up to top-seeded Don Bosco Prep from New Jersey.
The winner of the entire tournament will be announced at 12 p.m. on January 16 at: http://www.highschoolsports.net/massey/NationalChampionship/Football/Varsity/Boys/2011/.
HighSchoolSports.net is also hosting the ‘Super 25 People’s Champion’ tournament, which fans can vote on throughout January.
Hendricken is entered in that contest as well, and the team with the most votes will receive $2,000 toward their athletic department. To vote, go to http://www.highschoolsports.net/mvnc/.
