DISORIENTED DRIVER

A driver pulled over by a Warwick Police officer, who said she was certain she was in Johnston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Officer Jeremy Smith was conducting a routine patrol on Warwick Avenue just south of Hoxsie Four Corners on September 10 around 2:30 a.m. when he noticed a gold Toyota Camry traveling north at a high rate of speed. He observed the vehicle swerve from right lane to left while passing other cars and obtained a radar reading of 58 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.

According to his report, Smith activated his lights, made a U-turn and caught up to the vehicle at the Hoxsie intersection. He continued to observe the vehicle operating erratically, striking a curb with its front right tire. After hitting the curb, the driver noticed the officer and began to slow down but did not stop. The car continued along at about 10 miles per hour to Namquid Drive, eventually stopping beside the Job Lot plaza.

Smith then approached the vehicle and identified the driver as Kerilyn Shaw, 26, of 11 Riverview Avenue in Smithfield. While speaking with Shaw, the officer noticed she had a mild odor of alcohol on her breath, with bloodshot eyes and appeared to be confused about her whereabouts.

The driver stated she was heading home to Smithfield after leaving a friend’s house, telling the officer she could not remember where the friend lived initially but then stated she came from West Warwick.

When asked if she knew where she was, she said yes and that she was in Johnston. She also stated that she had only had a few beers that evening. She was asked to exit the vehicle and agreed to submit to a standardized series of sobriety tests, which she was unable to complete successfully.

Based on his experience, Smith made the decision that Shaw was unfit to operate a motor vehicle. She was handcuffed and placed in the cruiser, and a search of her vehicle was conducted. There, an empty 18 pack of Bud Light Platinum and an empty bottle of Jagermeister was found in the trunk. A half full bottle of Jagermeister was also found in a purse on the front seat.

While being transported to headquarters, Shaw again reiterated that she believed she was in Johnston. After having her rights read at the station, she agreed to submit to a chemical breathalyzer test, which resulted in a 0.215 and a 0.225 BAC reading.

Shaw was issued a summons for driving under the influence first offense, and a violation for speeding 11 plus miles in excess of the posted speed limit and a laned roadway violation. She was later released to a sober adult.

DVD DASH

A suspected shoplifter’s plans for a movie night were squashed when he was apprehended with $314.49 worth of DVDs from the Post Road Walmart.

Officer Julio Benros was dispatched to the department store on September 1 around 1:20 p.m. for a report of a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival, he met with the store’s loss prevention team, who stated that Nicholas Desrosiers, 26, of 2 Amvet Drive Apt. A in Plainville, Mass. was observed taking 11 DVDs.

Desrosiers reportedly concealed the movies on his person and exited the store without making any attempt to pay. He had with him a utility knife, which according to the report was used to open the DVD cases during the shoplifting attempt.

He was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and later released with a court summons.

PILFERED PURSE

Officer Brian Murray met with a victim at police headquarters who wanted to file a report of a stolen wallet from the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall.

According to the victim, she was at the store on September 5 around 4:30 p.m. when she noticed her wallet missing from her purse, which was in a shopping cart she was using during the incident.

Among the items taken were her driver’s license, EBT card, four credit cards, a debit card, a personal check, car keys and $14 in cash. She did contact the store’s loss prevention security, who were going to review video surveillance with Officer Murray. At the time of this report there are no suspects or witnesses.

STOLEN DIRT BIKE

A Vernon Street resident who posted a dirt bike for sale on Craigslist recently found that the bike was stolen from a shed.

Officer Tomas Bogusz visited the victim on September 18 at 7:30 a.m., who told him that about a half hour earlier she discovered that someone had cut the lock on her back yard shed and her dirt bike was gone. She identified it as a red and white 2002 Honda XR250, which she purchased several months ago for $1,800. As it was a bike, there was no registration and it did not have a vehicle identification number.

The victim also advised that after posting the bike on the online site, a male subject called her several times stating that he would like to purchase the bike and asked for her address, which she provided. She did not obtain the man’s name.

The case was forwarded to detectives, and there are currently no witnesses or suspects.
